Toohey's News

Yeah so this sucks but everything Lucas is saying sounds exactly like what players say when they end up leaving. "My manager deals with that stuff", "I'm really enjoying my footy at the moment", etc.

At the end of the day he only properly cracked first grade at a relatively old age, he's older than Bradman and would have made literally millions, maybe more than three million, less than him. It's a lot easier to sell players like Bradman & Jacob on taking $700Kish when they have more than half a decade of already earning that behind them. I of course want Lucas to stay but he is in the exact position where $1 million+ tax free for a couple of years is going to be very hard to turn down.

A lot will depend on how high he is on the priority list for these new clubs but I can't begrudge Lucas seeing what he's worth out there.
Yeah when I heard him on that radio interview saying “I just leave that to my manager, I’m not involved” or whatever … that sounds like he’s going. Heard it all before with Dom, sadly.

Lets be real.

Lucas isnt Boyd Cordner. Lucas hasnt played rep footy. And hasn't been considered in the Blues extended squad.

The Cam Murray's of the world fetch $1m. Lucas is distinctly, a lesser tier player. His ceiling value is about $800-900k imo. He is currently paid $700k plus. Clearly the club had made Lucas an offer consistent with his current contract, because tbh that's all he is ****ing worth.

Moses thinks if his client waits until Nov 1 he may attract offers from PNG or Perth which will exceed what he can get from the Knights. This is true.

But Lucas wont move to WA for an extra 80k net p.a. and he'll have to decide if he wants to miss out on a Premiership window, playing with his brothers, in his home region among his family, becoming a one club legend, and maintaining the conditions that provide for his current form, in exchange for some extra cash.

And if that's what he wants, then he is already gone. And if he doesnt want PNG, then he ain't going anywhere imo

I agree with most of that,
But Lucas is from the south coast.

I know the Cleary news happened today and there is still plenty of time but regardless of who I am if I’m a player, Luai and AJ for a year or so isn’t exactly selling me on joining them or living in PNG to finish at the bottom for a few years.

Money may talk for players who don’t have options (because who was willingly going to pay Luai over a million dollars going forward LOL) that guys like Pongadidnt even bother waiting and Latrell who could easily attract a huge offer from them have no interest in joining.

And every other fanbase in the NRL actively rooting against them to succeed isn’t exactly pleasant either.

Knowing our luck the coach whisperer Robbo will get into his ear with some magic words like he did with Dom and Watson.

Maybe but I don’t think it’s that easy now, with the way we are playing and our coach. I say we beat the Roosters if we had our full strength side. I think we had all 5 out.

Yeah I agree, did feel that way too

Was just trying to think who else would show an interest. With more teams in the mix it’s actually worse for PNG (for any player)

Lucas averaged 132 per game in 2024 and 143 in 2025. He's at 118 this year but that's heavily injury affected.

Murray is averaging 95 this year and his career high is 129 per game.

I don't think this should be the barometer for how effective a player is, but if it's your barometer, Lucas is genuinely right up there. Has been top 5 for both metres gained & tackles made for his position, similar strike rate for scoring tries to Haumole, leads the NRL among back rowers in tackle efficiency this season if that's a stat you put a lot of stock in...

I would love Lucas to he resigned, he is a great bloke, player, looks to he a leader and could captain one day.

He is consistent and I wouldn’t trade him for a soul, yes we have many second rowers and if Lucas was to leave Manu would slot easily into the position so it won’t kill us, but id really love to see Lucas stay, he is one of my favourites.

I will play devils advocate and say we have to be smart, we need to keep Bradman, we have many high level second rowers but we have no one right now I think could take over from Bradman as a like for like in terms of instantly being damaging, so we do have to be smart.
