Toohey's News

It does sound like Dan might have some medical issue, and after effects of covid would be one thing a doctor would look at - but there are dozens of things from low iron levels to gluten intolerance to early stages of diabetes to low vitamin D levels etc etc etc that could cause fatigue. Most of those things are easily diagnosed and treated.
I assume all the players have regular physicals to check for all those things, but maybe Dan needs to get tested for some less likely causes.
All his talk at the start of the year , he has had a good preseason wants his Origin spot back , blah blah blah . I'm sure the medical staff would have explored all avenues if they thought it was medically related . First run of the game last week plodded up like an old draught horse . If he doesn't pull his finger out this week he better be shaking hands with Ronny

The idea of him not being able to compete as hard as he would like is an interesting one. Leaving any talk of poor technique etc out, if he is feeling winded / out of breath real easy, maybe he has long covid?
Not sure if he ever got covid, but I see heaps of people with chronic fatigue type issues these days. Even young fit people.
Pretty much the entire team had it in 2022 during the pre-season I believe.

It’s almost time for the glue factory!

Doing some googling he was out with covid August 22, and March 23 … if he had it pre-season 22 like everyone did then that’s a fair few infections.

It was the first thing that sprung into my head when I read that article too, but could equally be depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, anything really.

Pretty sure if it was something medically related the staff would have picked up on it with the constant medical checks they get.

I put it down to Dsaf being a lazy plodder and all talk no action, quite embarrassing actually.

Yeah they pick up things like chronic fatigue pretty quickly. Brought on by things like glandular fever and such. You can’t disguise it at all, if you’ve got it people notice.

I think he looks like a guy who’s lost his passion and doesn’t really want it anymore. There’s gotta be guys putting their hand up for the spot somewhere in the club, there normally is regardless of how young they are.

I remember an article a few years back saying he really struggled to come back after getting covid. It coincided with his form being massively poor too. Wonder if there is something to it?
Then it is the club’s responsibility to thoroughly investigate this instead of putting their head in the sand, if they haven’t already done so.
Doing nothing is what bone-headed clubs do.

Says the recruitment focus for 2026 is to sign a dominant halfback. Says we have few players and little salary cap off contract in 2025, but with Hastings and others off contract in 2026 (we have only 9 players signed for 2026), getting a halfback who can win a premiership is the most "crucial" recruitment decision since we signed Ponga. Toohey says we have high hopes for 19 year old Zac Herdegan who will finish year 12 this year and join the club next year. He also says Jonah Pezet has suffered a season ending knee injury and will probably be looking for a new club next year.

Says Frizz may have "stirred the hamstring in his good leg" while doing rehab, so needs to get that right now.

Says Brian McDermott is being talked about for the Hull FC head coaching role, but says he is enjoying his time in Newcastle and is keen to stick around.

Says the club is allowing Gags to be shopped around to ascertain his market value - Toohey seems to think that could backfire on us, as it did last time we did that.

The way Toohey has written it, it’s hard to tell if he’s just throwing stuff out there or if he knows something, but unquestionably the situation is that there’s very little wiggle room for 2025 but lots for 2026. About a third of the roster have deals for 2026 and the only players I’ve heard that we’re actively trying to extend right now are Leo (desperate to get him locked down before Nov 1) and Armstrong. So obviously if we wanted to take a crack at getting an elite or potentially elite #7 rather than just making do with guys who can competently do the job, that’s when we’ll be in a position to do it.

Reading the article is does line up with what I heard about Hastings being on Dsaf money in the last year of his deal. Having ~800k freed up to spend is nice but there's like 6 dominant halfbacks in the comp so good luck with that.

Would make more sense of the 3 year deal for Cogger covering 25 and 26 too. Cos if the club decides to drop $500K+ come November 1 to bring Pezet back, or take a similarly big swing on someone else available from that date (the only names on the list of players who can be negotiated with who I’d give consideration to are Braydon Trindall and Tom Duffy… obviously Sam Walker too but he will be locked up on big money well before then), the Jacko release/permission to negotiate request will come through within the hour after that.

The other thing is that I don't agree that we actually need a dominant halfback to be a very good side (ignoring how exceedingly unlikely it is that the knights will sign one anyway).
We've seen with both Blake Green pre-ACL and Hastings pre-crippling that a guy who can get the team to its spots and then let Ponga go to work is plenty good enough.

It’s good enough for most teams. Good enough for the very best teams? I’m not sure. I think it would depend who’s at five-eighth.

All this talk and no results, we cop it all the time. If they don’t sign Cleary and get him released from Penrith, I’ll never believe them again

Read as Tooheys opinion. Not a write up from a source.

Being honest though and I'm a big Jacko Hastings fan, I doubt we win a comp with him as a 7, we'd have to have the Safs dominating and Frizell and Gags a years younger but same desire they have now. I mean we may get that in a couple years with thr Thompson Twins dominating, but our two best players now are 33 yr old centre and 34 yr backrower.

Not saying it can't be done, but the teams all round laziness to not, carry on the hard work of the 10 game winning streak and automatically just want to sit back and watch KP was alarming this yr. Sad for KP but we needed the team to be without him for a period of time to learn to play as a footy team again.

I have biug hopes for likes of Herdegen and Linnane and potentially Loza and Fletcher Hunt. Some real talent there and I think Jacko is good enough for now to bring the team through and Pyrce.

Whole team and club need to be on with doing hard yards though. To do that 10 game streak or play like that again, the whole team needs to be intelligent and buying in on what coaching staff a training.
