Toohey's News

Definitely one of those things where if it works well and we win, it looks like a master stroke, but if we lose, there’s questions about why he was left on the bench for so long, whether starting him could have made the difference, etc.

It’s probably fair enough for a first game back after an extended lay-off but yeah hope he starts next week.

Toohey says we need to buy a hooker and a winger for 2024.
He says Dylan Lucas is expected to take up his players option for 2024.
Oryn Keeley, Ryan Rivett, Paul Bryan and Myles Martin are expected to get top 30 spots for 2024.
He says that leaves us 6 spots to fill and 9 players off contract.

Two of our forwards in SG Ball have been suspended for the grandfinal, including McKewn, who was probably our best in the semi final.
The Mathews halfback avoided suspension, so we go in full strength in Mathews.

Can someone give me some background on Paul Bryan and Miles Martin?
Paul Bryan is a Qld rep prop who joined us last year and played in Ball. When the Ball season finished he joined the Flegg squad and was one of our better forwards all season. He played in the Flegg GF. He started training with Firstgrade this year and did his ACL very early in the pre-season, so might make it back for Flegg for the end of the season.
Myles Martin joined us from Parramatta last year, but originally from Bathurst, he is a tall lock forward. This year he is captain of Ball and should join Flegg next week. He trained with firstgrade all off season and is still in some of the training pics now.

So both middle forwards.

Brodie Jones is massively underrated.

I'm reminded of a state of origin game years ago where Steve Simpson played off the bench as a middle forward and only had about 2 runs for 20 metres and about 25 tackles. All over the net you could see posts where people were rating Simpson NSWs worst player and a waste of space, then someone asked Gordon Tallis where Qld had lost the game and he said Steve Simpson had bashed the hell out of them.

Jones has come off the bench in all our wins and our draw and the narrow loss against Penrith, and our bench middles have held their own in all those games. The two games he hasn't been there for are the Parra game and the round one Warriors game - both games where we fell to pieces when the bench forwards came on.

Bench middle who goes out to hold our defence together is a new role for Jones, but he's been there for all our best games this year and hasn't been there for the games we fell in a heap. He has made 123 tackles and missed 3, all in the middle, and all hard hits.

I can’t really say I agree about Brodie.

First, point of order: in the Parra game I’d say we “fell to pieces” sometime in between the ball being kicked off and the first tackle. You wouldn’t exactly say we were on top and then the bench lost us the game.

Secondly, I’m scratching my head trying to recall any hard hits from Brodie and a low % of missed tackles is not evidence of that. I’m gonna put it out there that Jared Waerea Hargreaves is more the kind of guy I’d call a hard hitter, even with his 12 missed tackles and 91.2% tackle efficiency. I gotta say I’m with Barry, Brodie has been invisible and I read his involvement in our wins as correlation without causation.
