Toohey's News

Is Zammit responsible for Kobe Rugless from Roosters, Gyris Glamizina from Warriors, Zane Camroux from Wests, Temple Kalepo from Warriors, Liam Sutton from Cronulla, Campbell Woolnough from Raiders, Chris Slater-Raptis from Wests, David Hollis from Parra, Sebastien Sua from Warriors.

I suppose if you pick up 10 or so lower grade guys from other clubs, one of them will be a Leo Thompson.
All those that you have listed were signed for either Jersey Flegg or NSW Cup back ups

So by that logic he must have known what he doing as Leo was signed straight to Development and top 30 for this year before being straight promoted to top 30 for last year

So maybe Zammit was going to be our best recruitment guy and will have to see if local guy and focusing on local talent will work again or not

Nothing against Toohey but far out his show is the most boring sounding pod I’ve ever heard. So monotone throughout, he almost makes it hard to care what he is speaking about.
Wow, total opposite for me, it’s one of the highlights of my week. Especially when he’s interviewing ex players.

Yeah I think Zammit was more focussed on first grade signings. Those junior signings would have been more Alex McKinnon and Garth Brennan’s areas before they left, I’d have thought? Could be wrong though.

Brennan basically left because he wanted to pick players on merit as he saw it, and Zammit wanted his signings to be picked regardless, and nearly all our development contracts go to guys like Kobe Rugless, Tevita Toloi, Christian Mana'amnia etc etc - guys Zammit got to sign with offers of firstgrade pre-seasons and development contracts.

I'll listen if there's a good guest but generally doesn't seem like anything newsworthy comes out of it anymore, and if it does it'll be posted here or rehashed in his article on the weekend. Don't blame the bloke at all for just collecting a cheque and doing little work now that he's "retired" but as a long-time reader it's a shame, he was very reliable and insightful for a long time.

The real shame is that no one else has really taken over as the go-to for Knights info. Anything noteworthy comes from Sydney media and to them the Knights are out of sight out of mind unless it's Ponga-related. Haven't even had a Telegraph league journalist based in Newcastle since Toohey left half a decade ago as far as I know.

Dom Young's manager asked for Dom to be released to Parra for the rest of the season. Knights said no.
Toohey speculates that Ponga might be used off the bench in a "second fullback" role - which sounds like a running 5/8 to me.
With Jake Saifiti and Elliott coming back soon, there will be some decisions to be made in the forwards.
Zac Hosking should play against us next week and Toohey says he was rejected by the Knights twice - when we didn't give him a spot last year, and when he wanted to come back this year.
Blake Green is being credited within the club for the improved attack structures, with Joey attending 2 sessions a week also a factor.
Peter Parr is in no hurry to replace Zammit, but one name mentioned is Scott Fulton who has had a recruitment role at Manly.

I assume Doms release request happened when he was dropped, I don't know why he would want to go to para being back in the squad and having a pretty good game last week.

Playing our captain and best player in some of utility role off the bench.. that would have to be AOBs wet dream. I can see a bench of Mann, Crossland and Ponga in our future lol

I think Manly's recruitment has been good recently, they have good forward depth, brought guys from other clubs like Tuilagi and Saab and been able to bring through some of their Young guys.. so it would seem like a decent pick up at face value if it eventuates.

Tyson Frizzel is back in the frame for SOO with his good form this year so far. Toohey hints he is playing for a new contract.

Gagai will also be in the conversation for Qld selection.

Hastings went into the last game with hamstring tightness which is why he handed over goal kicking to Miller and general kicking to Crossland.

Temple Kalepo could get a top 30 spot and play NRL if he can play long minutes and do a decent job in reserve grade soon. He has played 2 games in 2 years at the Knights.

S G Ball hooker Malachi Smith had to sit out our draw with the Roosters a few weeks ago because of a clause in his release from the Roosters that said he couldn't play against them. It doesn't include finals, so he should be back to his best today when we play the Roosters in the first final.

Some have labelled the Tamika Upton 5 year deal as the first million dollar deal in NRLW.

English 5/8 Georgia Roche has signed a multi year deal and will replace Kirra Dibb as Jesse Southwell's halves partner. Toohey also says the Southwell sisters, Johnston, Higgins, Romaniuk and Predebon are all set to return.

Well hopefully Hastings has learnt after last game to hand the kicking duties over permanently. Miller is way better.
Yes for goal kicking. Hopefully he is right for kicks in play. Gamble has a big boot on him! And crossland will hopefully have the odd kick out if dummy half in games. Good to have a few kicking options.

Some of you may remember an exciting young NSW batsman Peter Toohey who played 15 tests for Australia during the split in the game caused by Kerry Packer. He is Barry Toohey’s brother.

I've known that for about 20 years, but for the life of me, I don't know how I know. I did have a friend years ago who was always talking about how he played juniors with Peter Toohey in Blayney - maybe he told me.

It’s up in the digital edition

- Strong mail that Ponga will drop back to the bench with Gamble to start.
- Elliott pushing to return next week but O’Brien taking a cautious approach and more likely to return after the bye.
- Backline has been completely revamped from the one that last took on the Cowboys in Townsville
- 17 year old North Devils halfback Zac Herdegen has signed a three year deal with the Knights knocking back the Broncos. His sister Jayde a former under 19s Maroons 5/8 is also expected to join the club.
