Toohey's News

Actually happened with two different clubs, had his contract ripped up by the Knights for disciplinary reasons and then Manly for Domestic violence.
Probably just a nice way of saying it I guess

Good on him for turning his life around (it seems) but no way would he get away with that now and would probably be made an example out of like Barba was.

Guess that’s the perks of playing for the Roosters

Not 100% sure, but I think Manly might have just signed him as he was going to court for those charges & even though it was prior to Manly, they really had no choice but to tear the contract up. Obviously a ****ty human being at the time for the assaults & blaming it on the NRL, but if he has gone a fair few years now without incident, then good on him for reforming himself.

Yes, Manly sacked him once they became aware of the domestic violence offences which occurred whilst he was playing for us.

Fair enough, memory was foggy but I do remember the domestic violence stuff being during his time at the Knights so it makes sense. Serves me right for checking on Wikipedia lol.
But with that now said, there's even less of a chance he would have been allowed to sign with another club with that court case over his head if that happened now I imagine.

Toohey's news today is mostly about Alex McKinnon and the amount of effort he puts into junior recruitment now he is fulltime in the job.
He says he has travelled to see all 50 in the under 15s system play - from Qld to NZ.
He also says defence is his focus - and if what happened in under 16s this year is a result of his efforts - he is getting results. I looked back as far as i could find records for under 16s, and our side this year was the best defensive side i could find. (they scored 324 and let in 112 over 11 games all season - so about 30 to 10 average scoreline).
McKinnon says he is familiar with all 140 players in our junior system and nominates 5 to watch.
Tex Hoy - "He could definately challenge for first grade next season"
Luke Huth "He is everything this club is about"
Bayden Searle - "He is a ripper who is all about effort and tenacity"
Simi Sasagi "There is no reason he won't put pressure on the senior squad"
Jaron Purcell - "He's a lock out of the Jake Trbojevic mould"

Other news is that Mark O'Meley has missed out on reserve grade coaching position, but his 19 year old son, Jake O'Meley, is going to train with us this year. I saw Jake O'Meley play under 18s a few years ago and he is like a shorter and solider version of Mark. He is a 110kg prop who looks like a barrel on legs.
Tony Gleeson is promoted from Flegg to coach reserve grade next year, and Adam Bettridge goes from assistant to Flegg coach.

*Knights will have a good amount of money to spend for 2021 but not quite the war chest that some think. It's unlikely Knights will be able to sign the top players on $800-1mil like David Fifita. 11 players are coming off contract worth around $3.5mil combined not including Dan, Hunt and Barnett who should have new deals announced soon.
*Mitch Andrews has been sacked for repeat alcohol infringements.
*Hymel Hunt has put on 5kg of muscle in the gym in a bit to become a more dynamic outside back.
*Knights will make a small profit for 2019.
*Darren Mooney is now the central regional manager for tennis.
*Mooney and Bedsy are the coaches of the Merewether under 10's cricket team who both their sons play for.
*The opening of the centre of excellence will be delayed until the start of 2021.

Not a bad position to be in. A third of the roster on a third of the cap coming off contract. A lot of young talent to come through. Realistically, you can't carry more than three players on top dollar. We have two, Pearce and Klemmer, with another on the way if Ponga is upgraded. You can build a team around them. Then you need some Lachy Fitz type players, locals who don't cost the Earth but are regular first graders. Then the young guys coming through give you one or two years on unders and you can choose to spend a bit (~$500k) on players in positions you are short of. That gives you a strong squad.

Ponga with his rep bonus's would be tilting $800k already surely? I'd say including bonus's if we retain him which hopefully his form bounces back we'll be looking @ including bonus's $1.25 million with hopefully a healthy chunk in TPA's?

Shame about Mitch Andrews.
He had a worse 2019 than 2018, but he has the talent if he can find the motivation.
I hope another club picks him up.

The centre of excellence will end up being an extra toilet cubicle if they don’t spend that money soon.

I'm working off memory but I think you've gone a bit high.

I'd say with bonuses 650k and new contract somewhere around 900k-1mil. Realistically fullbacks ahead of him:

1. Tedesco
2. RTS
3. Turbo.

Papenhauzwn (spelling) is starting to look good too.

At least Lomax is a natural right side centre. Good goal kicker is a bonus. I haven't see a lot of him but haven't seen much to rave about either, he's only 20 though. Drags haven't been much better than us

LHW is 19 I think
