Talking Finals

If all goes to plan, the most likely side we will play is Gold Coast on a Saturday night up there.

3rd v 6th.

However, I expect 7th or 8th to put on a real good show, so not even 5th place is safe.

Titans v Knights - I wouldn't complain. Of the top 4, they are who I'd like to play.

Lets win tomorrow night to guarantee being there.

At this stage i think an out of form Dragons and a Kimmorley-less Bulldogs are more attractive opponents.

Knights facing date with destiny
By Steve Jancetic AAP Sun, 30 Aug 2009 19:46:15

They could finish anywhere from fourth to ninth, but rookie Newcastle coach Rick Stone says his squad is comfortable in the knowledge they will head to Canberra on Monday night with their NRL finals destiny in their own hands.

With the luxury of being able to sit back and see how all the other games played out over the weekend, the Knights have been left with the simple task of beating Canberra to ensure their slice of finals football.

Lose to the Raiders and they face a sudden-death encounter against Penrith at EnergyAustralia Stadium, with the winner confirming a top eight finish and the loser making an early start on Mad Monday celebrations.

"We're lucky enough to control our own destiny," Stone said.

"We're in the eight at the moment and with a positive performance and a win we'll be cemented into the eight for the year and then we'll worry about Penrith the week after.

"We're excited about going there, we're excited about getting close to playing the semi-finals if we get a win and we're going there with some confidence after the last two weeks."

While the Knights probably would not admit it, there would also be a strong desire to put the Raiders to the sword to improve their points differential.

Newcastle are currently 58 points behind Manly on points differential, and can jump ahead of the Sea Eagles if they make up that deficit or if the Knights win both their remaining matches and Manly go down to Gold Coast next week.

There is also the slight chance of a home final being up for grabs - with the Knights, Manly and Brisbane all some chance of sneaking up to fourth if Melbourne go down to the Warriors in Auckland next weekend.

That's too many ifs for Stone, who said he was wary of the Raiders who have proved in recent wins over St George Illawarra and Brisbane that they are a tough proposition at home.

"They've taken the Bulldogs and the Dragons and a couple of top teams to the wire," Stone said.

"Their win against the Dragons a couple of weeks ago was really impressive and it was a real semi-final intensity from the Raiders.

"We're expecting that again and we're preparing ourselves for that and we understand it's going to be a tough ask."

Interchange forward Cory Patterson remains in doubt with a hip complaint, with either he or one of Wes Naiqama or Marvin Karawana to drop off an extended bench.

NSW forward Tom Learoyd-Lahrs had been hoping to return from a hamstring injury for the Raiders but is a non-starter after failing to train on Saturday.

Dont see why we cant win both games tbh!

Currently, for me, I would rather play the dragons first, titans second and then bulldogs. they showed today they can not only win, but smash a team even without noddy like they did earlier in the year.

Its going to be hard whoever we play isnt it???
Especially away from home, I think that may get us!
And if we win the first week and play a losing side (not sure how exactly it will pan out) but that would grant us the "home" side and if we play Brisbane, Melbourne or Gold Coast will we play at home like games with no sydney teams do or are we considered a Sydney team?

If we win the first week we get a home semi dont we?

But lets make it there first, if we win tomorrow, then we can start talking scenerios.

Based on the Dragons v Souths game, I wouldn't mind playing the Dragons in week 1 of the finals. However they have the leagues best coach and they could easily bounce back and take out all their anger on us (imo they are capable of putting a score on most teams if they turn up to play a little differently to yesterdays game).

Are we completely wiping out Melbourne, they haven't been at their best but down there and with Inglis firing. I can understand, no team would want to.

I'd hate to first the storm. With so many class players you know its going to be a hard one especially down in melbourne. I;d personally like to play the Bulldogs or the Dragons and if we play to our full ability we can beat them. A win over either would be a tremendous moral boost going into the latter stages of the finals.

Of the teams currently in the top four, I reckon playing Melbourne at Olympic is the worst case scenario.

However, I don't think they've decided whether it will be at Olympic or the Dome, yet ... if it is at the Dome then it's a slightly less daunting prospect, but still probably the toughest of the top four, given the current form and injury concerns of those sides!

Me neither NF, there a completely different side up at Skilled Park

I agree they are a very different side but i think if we had to play them in the first week of the finals we could beat them given the fact that both tigers and the sharks have really pushed the titans in the previous weeks and i believe have showed some weaknesses in their game especially in the opening 20 minutes.

We can't talk finals yet because we are no certanies to be there, if we win tonight then we can start talking but untill then im not saying anything, If we win tonight and next week we will probably finish 6th, and play the Dragons who will probably come 3rd

The Storm game is confirmed for Etihad Stadium. (Telstra Dome, Colonial Stadium)

I prefer the Titans rather than going down there, especially when you consider that will be both KooGa teams knocking each other around!
