Round 2: Sharks v Knights @ Toyota Park

Gutsy effort from the boys to bring it home. Our backs weren't too great under the high ball, but Aku improved somewhat.

Is anyone else drawing similarities between Vuna and Uate? All game Uate was crabbing. If Smith could give him the same advice he gave Vuna to run straight I think it could improve his game immensely.
You should be proud mate,if they were my side i would be:)

Yes but it would've been smarter and more of a high-percentage play to put it in the corners, make the Sharks players turn around and have to work it back from their goal line - or better yet, get a repeat set.

From 10 out directly infront I would say go for the field goal, but not from where Dureau was hacking at it from.

IMO at that stage of the game why the hell not go for field goal. Its still getting the ball down that end.

Good, hard fought win by the knights. I was at the game and I think the difference Dereau made WITHOUT Mullen. The backs really put in and helped the fowards out. GO THE KNIGHTS

Courageous Knights down Sharks

NEWCASTLE 24 bt CRONULLA 12

NEWCASTLE lost star playmaker Jarrod Mullen and two more players to injury, but courageously grabbed a 24-12 victory in the NRL clash with Cronulla at Toyota Stadium.

Former NSW State of Origin half Mullen had struggled with what appeared to be a hip injury from the 15th minute and eventually succumbed in the 23rd.

The Knights needed to play the final quarter of the match with just one man on the bench after interchange forward Cameron Ciraldo was stretchered off with with a serious leg injury.

Representative forward Steve Simpson had lasted just 15 minutes in the first half before hurting his hamstring.

In Mullen's absence, late call-up Scott Dureau stepped up, scoring one try, setting up another and booting a timely 40-20.

The Knights scored four tries to two to open their 2009 account in front of 11,148 fans.

Cronulla were without injured stars Ben Ross and Brett Kearney, as well as suspended halfback Brett Seymour who took the unusual step of publicly apologising for a drunken night out before kick-off.

On the plus side for the Sharks, sacked Bulldog Reni Maitua made his first appearance off the bench after recovering from an ankle injury suffered during the pre-season trials.

The Knights led 12-6 at halftime and extended that lead four minutes after the break - after they were piggy-backed downfield by two penalties for grapple tackles - when interchange forward Chris Houston dived over from dummy half.

They went ahead 24-6 when Dureau laid on a four-pointer for Richie Fa'aoso with a deft short pass in the 47th minute.

The Sharks got it back to two converted tries' difference when halfback Blake Green threw more dummies than a sleep deprived baby and scooted over in the 50th minute.

When Ciraldo was carried off in the 60th minute after a sickening collision, they turned on an inspired defensive display and clung on.

The Sharks had been denied twice by video referee Phil Cooley in the first half after five-eighth Trent Barrett had given them an early lead by grabbing his own bomb and touching down under the posts.

Dureau finished a 75m movement to score the Knights' first try before a miraculous ball from centre Junior Sau, who was being thrown into touch in goal by three defenders, allowed Cory Paterson to score their second.

NEWCASTLE 24 (S Dureau R Fa'aoso C Houston C Paterson tries K Gidley 4 goals) bt CRONULLA 12 (T Barrett B Green tries L Covell 2 goals) at Toyota Stadium. Referee: B Cummins, Brett Suttor. Crowd: 11,148.

My thoughts on Lulia:

- he was pretty solid in defense.
- his runs are all similar (where he runs across field and steps towards the oppositions line - easy to pick up and nail him especially if he doesn't mix it up at all)
- apart from his shocking pass in the first half to McManus, he had a pretty good game. He should've held the ball for longer and drawn the Sharks winger, then put Jimmy in to score, instead he just threw a shocker.

Did anyone else see the post match press conference thing where Kurt was sipping the juice box? I thought he looked like the most innocent little child drinking his juice. Even the *SLURP* at the bottom of the poppa. Lol

I went to wests to watch it...whered every1 else go?

Just got home now, was at the game, sat in front of the knights nannas haha. It was pretty bad veiwing tbh, goalposts obstructed heaps, and couldnt see too much down the other end. Atmosphere was dead quite the majoirty of the game too, hardly any newcastle supporters too.

Cheerleaders were a distraction , This improves my record at knights games to 5-2.

Yeh I found that funny haha. Most captains sitting there don't slurp on their juice poppers - but Gidley is unique ;)

Probably about as funny as when Vuna did a press conference and the reporters didnt ask him any questions.

Where abouts where you?

We got seats for the Southern grand stand but ended up just standing on the small hill on the southern side. :p

Directly behind the goalposts at the northern end, Family Hill, but we got the seats. I got one of the player/officials passes so i get in for free :)

huge improvement this week the defence was terrific and the attack was more structured due to Dureau being there

Very strong effort from the boys accross the park BUT most people know how i feel about Lulia we must have someone that can replace him he was average at best i don't think he is a first grader at all bring someone in with a bit of spark ffs.

Dureau was awesome you could see how good he is at running the show (much better than Mullen at 7) we need him there every week he looks pretty solid too he's bulked up a bit and that 40/20 was superb.

Our tryline defence was great too the sharks had 44 tackles in our 20 that's insane!

I had a feeling i saw you at the game last night.. Were you with a little guy in a knights jersey with Buderus on the back U23? Possibly your little brother?

I was gunna call out but you disappeared once it started to rain. :fist:

On the game brilliant effort from the boys. Dureau was best on field apart from his kick out on the full but other then that i think he should have cemented his spot for sure now. Everyone played well though. Feeling so sorry for Ciraldo that was awful.
