Round 17 Panthers V Knights - Saturday 24 June 5:30pm - BlueBet Stadium, Penrith

Would have preferred to kick it to their weaker winger and manhandle him on tackle 1, but maybe that wouldn’t work for some reason, even though it worked against us last week when the Chooks kicked to Tuala repeatedly.

It is a Wayne Bennett tactic and we have used it since he was here. The idea isn't to contest. If you try and contest, knock it forward and the opposition comes up with it, that is the zero tackle. The idea is to arrive and put the catcher down as he is catching it. Close pressure can still produce errors, but if you tackle the bloke as he catches it, you are basically taking a tackle out of their set. Bennett loves that kind of stuff. We aren't really arriving at the same time as the ball at the moment. I'm not saying I agree with it either, just giving the background.
Yep, it's pretty common around the league. Our biggest problems have been an inconsistent chase and the fact that we're probably the worst play 4 team in the comp, last year we had Klem killing them with slow PTBs and for most of this year we made Miller our designated tackle 4 hitup for reasons unknown to anyone but AOB.

Lose tackle 4 and we lose the time for Hastings to land the kick properly, he's never been a great kicker anyway so that makes the task even tougher.

Clifford developed a bad case of the yips with his big kicking game, after a lot of them were going out on the full. From what I was told coaching staff wanted him to keep doing them but Jake lost all confidence.
In all fairness to the coaches the club hasn't got great kickers, Hastings, Pearce etc are never going to be like Moses, Cleary, Burton etc. Another point is our forwards rarely get us over the ad line where that extra half second gives the kickers more time and opportunity.
Yep Clifford had a fair few that went off at all angles before he stopped doing them, I think it was discussed at the time that was the reason too.

And it negates the kick return, broken field play.

Plus it brings the fullback up at speed to catch it, increasing the chance of an error if we have a defender also closing in on them at speed to tackle them.

We just execute it very poorly.

Most of the time, when we kick it long, the kick return runs it back to the 20-30 anyway as out kick chase is lazy.

NRL is about building pressure until they crack. We don't build any pressure.

Edited to add, the era of the twins an players of their size is over. Unless they have the size combined with the mobility, combined with the motor. But big lumbering forwards that take time to wind up and hit the line and drop is over.

We need to transition them out and stick to medium sized forward that get the ball at pace, hit the line at pace to bend the line back. Then repeat play after play for the 6. Combined with ball movement and block plays. Turning the ball two passes back to the ruck and trying to catch lazy markers returning to the D line for the next tackle.

I lost count of the number of times Penrith's forwards were getting the ball already at speed powering in to our line easily making their way up field. Vs ours getting the ball flat footed, then winding up and hitting the line.

The Knights game is too slow and predictable.

AOB's press conference showed just how delusional and out of his depth he is.

He thought both teams started well... What was he watching? We didn't get into their 20 in the first half.
We were gassed after 15 minutes. Our forwards were going now where. Our kicking game was rubbish. Always giving them
the ball back on their 20 or 30. They kicked long to corners and we were starting sets inside our 10 and going no where.

Their forwards wound up and ran hard and were all over ours. Dylan Lucas needs to run more but his work defensively was
outstanding again. But you got to get the ball to be able to run. Our forwards were woeful outside of Lucas.

Salmon and Peachy and Cogger looked liked superstars compared to our mob. That would have to rank as one the worst performances
form NRL team I have seen. Rubbish. Players not interested. No urgency. So many stupid things done. Gagai got owned. I love Dom, he's
great in space, but he is so poor defensively and a nightmare under the high ball.

Everyone knows AOB isn't an NRL coach and has no idea what he's doing and should have been sacked last year.

The real worry is the attitude of the Wests Group and Gardner. They don't seem to give a XXXX. I really thought they would bring some
professionalism and accountability. They haven't. The whole show is as much of a rabble as it was with Tinkler.

The other real worry is Peter Parr. I thought he'd make a difference too. He hasn't. I don't know how interested he really is either
or if he's just come home to retire. It's hard to see the Knight's being anything more than perennial losers with the current set up
and staff and attitude.

The fact that AOB is still the coach says all that needs to be said about the Wests Group and Parr. And with management like
that nothing is going to change. They are killing the club and don't seem to care.

And I thought I was a bit harsh on AOB.

<snip>

I thought we started well, but quickly became overpowered by their well, power game.

They were not kicking long for the most part because they were ending their sets on our 40 and therefore only needing out put in those same short bombs to land them on our 10m. We kept having to churn out of trouble ending our sets on our 40 - 50 and putting up short bombs meaning they start their sets on their 30, a 20m advantage.

Rinse repeat and that application of pressure I was saying and all it takes is one extra productive set in yardage, or an error from us and they are either putting up an attacking kick to contest it for a try, or actively attacking our try line for a few tackles at the end of their set.

When we got a leg up out of our end, we looked better with the ball in hand and attacking. We just couldn't work our way out of trouble repeatedly. Penrith didn't need to worry about missing their quality ball players and finishers as we were constantly under pressure and eventually we crack.

You know things are grim when knights #1 cheerleader Barry Toohey is saying negative things about the safs.

I've heard the players in interviews refer to Dsaf as the "alpha male" , made me laugh then and makes me chuckle now.

Both Safs have hearts the size of a pea and hit with the force of a wet lettuce leaf. Both need to be served a written warning to up their game or be moved on.

The answer: John Toleafoa
It was interesting in the reserve grade game this week that 3 of the Penrith props were experienced firstgraders and none of the Knights props had played firstgrade. John Toleafoa had the best numbers of our young props, but I thought Cooper Jenkins and Cal Burgess looked more like they were physically matching their opposites.
It was a good test for our young middles. They probably lost the forward battle, but not by much against their much older and more experienced opposite numbers.

I was really impressed with how they handled themselves against the more experienced pack. That Eddie Blacker bloke is a bloody monster.
