Recruitment And Retention Discussion

I’m happy with the longer term option. In two years we’d have been back to square one, and it wouldn’t have helped keep Ponga here any longer.

He’s a step above as a player of course, but it would be the Pearce signing mk2.

Yeah, even if we knew DCE was available, I think we still would have gone with Brown. It’s obvious the club’s number 1 priority at the moment is securing KP for life, and he’s not going to sign an extension knowing DCE would be 37 before he even started and he was looking at starting again with a new rookie half at 29. Brown will at least be the right age with experience.

If DCE was younger it would be no brainer but he’s not.

Or if we were a top four team in 2024 & had signed Leo for a few more years… I’d be rueing not being able to have a crack at DCE in that case.

Think Daley likes his $ & was offended by Manly only talking one year & a hefty pay cut . Wouldn't surprise if his management is holding them to ransom . And he ends up staying ? . Seems a big call to leave at his age & after 15 years .Might be a bit to play out yet

The lower offer must have really annoyed him, hey. In Manly’s case I don’t understand why they didn’t just renew it at the same amount or only slightly less. But DCE seems to have gone nuclear, too haha.

Sounds like DCE was testing the market too, so I would say the Knights were looking for a long term option for the club.

Happened when he was off-contract last time too, then the Titans stuff happened and he backflipped, Manly caved and gave him ten years. Manly fans probably aren't too fussed considering they've made 0 Grand Finals since. Seems like they've caved but he wasn't having it again after calling them on his bluff. Move on and let him finish on his own terms, dust their hands off of it.

Don’t know why players at backend of career expect to be paid top dollar when form is likely to drop due to that dreaded disease, old age.
As I commented in other thread DCE quoted in Tele, “No more footy at Manly beyond this year” think that means no NRL and likely a ESL for his grand hoorah, might have always had a hankering to try it.
Yes he might be looking for more dollars and then backflip but I will stick with ESL for now

More just a loyalty and thanks for everything type of thing. There are probably other examples in other sports. I think if he wins a premiership with them during that contract you give him his due. Even using Thurstons last year as an example, you kind of live with it knowing he helped the Cowboys get their first premiereship plus a GF.
Of course it's a business these days first and foremost and you see guys finishing elsewhere at the back end of their careers. Gotta keep looking ahead. Kind of sucks to see your guy in another jersey but it is what it is.

DCE literally is getting better with age and no major injury history recently, seaeagles f--ked up there, it was noted that Seibold wasn't at his recent wedding so hinted something there as well.

Hastings could very easily be that Blake Green style of five-eighth, who frees up a good attacking half to play a more eyes up/opportunistic style.

Hawkins isn’t very good and Volkman is… let’s just say “in need of a lot more experience”. Hastings still not that old, in theory has years left. His limited kicking won’t matter with Moses there.

Just need them to get to the point where they start thinking “well he’s worn out his welcome at every other club… but he might not with us! And then he could be in that job on a reasonable salary for years!”

(and, side note, they probably wouldn’t hate saving some money on the five-eighth jersey considering what Moses makes now)

I think it's very very unlikely, but maybe the eels get to a point mid-way through the year where brown is continuing to phone it in, their season is pretty much over and they talk themselves into a few months of Jacko having a red hot go for a new contract.
