PRE-SEASON CHALLENGE R2 - KNIGHTS V STORM - 1.45 Sat 24th - Churchill Park, Fiji

Can't sleep on Gamble. The shlt that bloke was doing on a week to week basis. He was a complete 5/8th. Incredibly tough competitor. Influential to the players around him. Difference maker.

Most of what Cogger offers we get from Hastings, and it's really a one man job.

I'd start Pryce for hell of it before starting Cogger at 6.

This. People are underselling what Gamble offered us last season. His passing game was fantastic, a few of his cut out passes were as good as any half in the game and his defence against some great attacking players was top shelf as well.

People talk about his energy and how he gets under opponents skin but that was expected. His skill set is a mile better than I thought it was initially.

Added to all that, he gave us the mongrel and attitude we had missed for decades.

Maybe not as big a thing for other sides, but after years of being mental midgets, it was huge for our team.

Think we just have to let it play out . Hope it's not decided by injury . May the best man win

Think everyone is saying the position is Gambles to lose . Love what he brings to the team .. But realistically if Ponga doesn't recover from those head knocks that winning streak doesn't happen & we are going into this season with a new coach . If our forwards are getting smashed coming out of our own end , our kicks invariably go straight to the opposing fullback & they begin their next set on the halfway or better. Also don't know if Ponga will be our goal kicker or how he will go . Some days he was brilliant some days ??. Maybe Hastings kicking game will be better he has his leg fixed ?Gambe off contract so expecting him to go even better . I like what Cogger brings to the table . Who knows Pryce might get a shot & unseat both of them . As I said jersey is Gambles to lose , just let it play out . Just good to have competition for spots . It's been a while!

It's a weird discussion that only happens in pre-season.
The truth is, we'll use about 35 players over the season and everyone who is firstgrade quality will get plenty of games.
Starting with the team that was winning last year is the obvious starting point, but everyone will get a shot, and our halves combination in the GF will be the 2 who can best do the job, based on how they go over the next 5 months or so.

The only question I have re halves is, how fit is Hastings?
We know Gamble, Pryce and Cogger have all had great pre-seasons and we also know Hastings missed all the main fitness work pre-christmas, but has been doing most of the sessions since Christmas.
He looked OK in the first trial, but maybe we need to give him 60 minutes or so this trial, to make sure he has the fitness to go 80 in round 1.

Hastings looks freaking ripped and did t look short of breath in 1st 40mins on a flog of a day. Which is a fair effort for someone not running properly in January. He lives and breathes league, not many distractions so his commitment to being right physically is 100%.

Yeah about halfway through last season he started hitting people like Trevor Gillmeister when defending on our line. Someone at the time said he was on a podcast crediting someone at the club with helping him with his defence, can't for the life of me remember who it was now.
Yeah, I remember listening to that podcast too. I think he was crediting Rory Kostjasyn with his improvement in D.

It was Rory Kostjaysn that Gamble credited for helping his defence on Toohey's podcast.

But everyone appears to be forgetting that Mann is gone. Who is the better 14, Gamble or Cogger? Surely you can’t leave one of them out with an open 14 position, particularly with hooker and fullback being the most injury prone position in the Knights.
Has to be Cogger at 6, Gamble at 14. Gamble was at 6 when we won some games, Cogger came on the field at 6 when they were 18 points behind to win the GF.
Both need to be in the side and don’t see Cogger being as versatile as Gamble, therefore I see Gamble as our best genuine utility. The Kurt Gidley curse.
