PNG set to become 18th NRL team

Just reading NRL players who play in PNG will get tax concessions. The example given was Nathan Clearly on his 1.3 million dollars would save $500k per year in tax. Mentioned danger pay also.

RIP salary cap. Using the market against players, PNG can offer to sign Clearly for 800k, hell even 900k per year and he still makes the same or more than in Australia, plus PNG get an extra 500k cap space to use.

Yeah, I really couldn't say if that will even be enough to tempt players over there. I definitely don't see them signing the likes of Cleary!

Will be interesting to see how it pans out, I guess if the side does become super-stacked they'd cut back on the concessions, but I'd still find it more likely they'd struggle to sign players and be competitive.

Yeah the most likely outcome is we’re about to find out what it actually looks like when a true reserve grade calibre team is in the NRL.

Didn't I read something ages back that they were going to work and train based in FNQ, and only play some games in PNG?

Yes, I read that they were going to be based in Cairns and from memory play at least some games there.

So no living in gated community then, live in Australia, play half the games here, likely more than half, play some games in PNG with security etc, and save a bucket load on tax or PNG team saves a bucket load on salary cap.

Seems attractive to players to me.

Living in Cairns (which is a lovely place) and paying less tax would have to be very attractive to the majority of players, the only downside would be the limited nightlife in Cairns would be an issue for some of the younger players.

If they play and train in Cairns it will just be till they get their details sorted.
The whole idea is to bring tourism, facilities, etc etc to PNG - not Cairns.

If they live in Cairns and just fly to PNG for the odd game then they won't be getting any tax breaks, they'll be Australian tax citizens, I'd have thought?

Yes, this seems to make more sense with all the things we're hearing.

I know people who loved living and working in PNG.
You have to live in a gated community with security guards, but the people I know worked in healthcare positions for Australian wages and could easily afford 3 or 4 servants to do all their cooking, washing, cleaning etc.
An NRL player could live like a king in PNG.
Yeah, I’ve heard the same from a few people — it can be a great experience if you’ve got the right setup and support. The local culture is really warm too, from what I’ve seen.

So I’ve heard a very strong rumour that PNG’s #1 recruitment target will be Patrick Carrigan. Makes sense, right? Handsome face for the marquee, culture setter, likely captain, maybe the 4th most valuable asset at his current club, so he may very well be gettable. All well and good.

But they will be making an offer of, get this:

$9 million

over, get this:

5 years.
