Phoenix Crossland discussion

I remember people on here losing it when he was resigned. He is not a valuable squad member.

I was impressed with his defence tonight.
To be fair, he was awful back then. The run of games at 9 last year finally clicked for him and he's been great ever since.

Article is about the injury crisis for the Kiwis and the prospect of Shaun Johnson delaying his retirement for a few more games, but also alludes to Crossland pretty much having the 9 jersey wrapped up with most options injured. Stacey Jones says he's reached out and Phoenix is keen.

Really hoping Johnson decides to pull on the jersey one last time. Great news about Phoenix! :D

I don’t mind throwing unconventional bordering comically odd opinions out there. But I think he could be an unbelievable 13.
A big preseason there putting on 5kgs, he’s probably the best defender in the side already, he has the passing to link well with forwards and halves, he’d make a million tackles, pretty good speed and mobility for a middle forward. It’s also a position where heart is the key determinant of success. Jurbo doesn’t have a muscle in his body, is slower than my grandmother, yet look how great he’s been there. Simply because he has a heart like pharlap which if one thing is certain Phoenix also has

With the likes of Arthur, Malachi Smith and eventually Diesel Hagan who is the HMatts captain (might move up to SG this year) Crossy will need to find another position. Utility will be it in end all and he’ll be perfect for it too. But he has a few years yet. Signing Arthur will probably put plenty of pressure on him as he creatively wise is very good Arthur. But it’ll be some time before he’s pushed from 9 as fitness wise he’s well above.

Having a player who covers 9, 7, 6 & 13 and at a high quality is incredibly important these days.

His versatility, 6, 7, 9, 13, 14 is what makes him popular along with his efforts, speed, tackling but 14 is his best as it fits the team best, he isn’t the best we have at 6, 7 9 & 13 but by far the best 14.

RISING PHOENIX EXTENDS

The nib Newcastle Knights have extended the contract of Phoenix Crossland for an additional two years, ensuring the local junior remains a one club player until at least the end of the 2028 National Rugby League season.

Crossland, 24, made his international debut for New Zealand in the Pacific Championships last October, after another outstanding season of resilience and versatility for the Newcastle Knights.

Born in Wellington and raised on the Central Coast, Phoenix has risen through the Knights pathways systems, making his NRL debut at just 18, against the New Zealand Warriors in Round 16, 2019.

nib Newcastle Knights Head of Recruitment Peter O'Sullivan said Crossland will play a huge role for the club moving forward.
