Phoenix Crossland discussion

Credit to him, I thought he started the season in not the greatest form, but he’s really found himself a home at 14. Even when Brailey plays 80, he comes on and has a great impact.

He is close to my favourite player at the moment. Has been all year really.

Always giving 100%, always comes in and makes an impact.

If only the whole squad had his enthusiasm.

There may be a sample size/quality of opponent thing going on here, but since we moved Phoenix to halfback, we’ve averaged 15.83 points conceded per game, compared to 23.05 with anyone else defending at half on the left edge.

While you can question whether 15.83 is how much we’d average over a whole season, I do think the performance against the Dolphins was our best defensive effort in a long time.

The funny thing is he is playing exactly the same style at 7 he played all through the juniors.
They tried to teach him traditional halfback skills of playmaking and game management and he didn't really take to it.
They let him go back to his high energy, high workrate, aggressive style that saw him make all the rep teams as a junior, and it's still what he does well - surprise, surprise.

Many won't agree, but he's a better version of Tyson Gamble as a half - higher workrate, better defence, more energy, a bit less aggression, but Tyson overdoes that a bit.

Tyson is better at key halves stuff like putting blokes through holes, BUT, he’s 28 and has well over 100 games over reserve and first grade almost exclusively playing in the halves.

Whereas Phoenix is a 24 year old who’s been shuffled between positions - only about a third of his reggies and first grade games have been in the halves.

I do think Phoenix is a better defender.

Gamble and Crossland in the halves together would be the ultimate competitor tag team

I remember people on here losing it when he was resigned. He is now a valuable squad member.

I was impressed with his defence tonight.

I think Jeremy Marshall King is fit but he probably plays better off the bench, so Phoenix at 9 would make sense for them.
