NRLW Recruitment & Retention Thread

Outside of Upton and the Titans fullback Peliti? most of the fullbacks in the NRLW are pretty average. One of the weakest position depth wise in the comp. Vette-Welsh looked good prior to her injury but hasn’t been the same since.

Vette-Welsh has apparently already signed a 3-year deal. Was nice getting to support a good Knights team for a few years.
Well they won 2 comps, so I guess they’ll be happy to now just spend the next two decades floating between mediocrity and complete irrelevance just like the men.

Was fun while it lasted. Should’ve known it was too good to last

She’s 28 coming off an acl. She was good but I think she belongs to the previous generation of top players.

I’d rather someone young like Teagan Berry, Abby Church also had a good year.

Realistically everyone’s a let down compared to Tamika. Hopefully Bo has still got it. Mostly just don’t want the marquee spot wasted.

Doesn’t really help the comp as whole either if we take one of the best players from the worst team.

I can totally understand these sentiments!
After all, we are the Knights and that’s what happens around us. There is nothing new, it is just typical.
One day things might change when we finally get a professional front office and maybe another generational junior like Joey to lead us to a premiership.

Poor thing hope she's doing ok
I mean all that grief and loneliness being so far away in Newcastle was to much so glad a 4 week jillaroos Pacific nations series helped her cope after dealing with all that since March...
Also so glad she found time to go travel and watch the Broncos play and cheer them on when she could during the season nothing screams grief and loneliness like a footy match. And supporting the team you sign for by getting a early release by dishing up the compassion dribble to get out of newy
She really needs to go to Vegas in March it will help her cope even more

Article where Parr says as little as possible, as usual,

Says we are "open" to signing a fullback to replace Upton, if one became available, but then says that would be nearly impossible.

He pretty much gives no clue on what we will do - just rules nothing out.

I don't know why the press talk to Parr about future plans, he gives them nothing.

I don't think she will be our marquee signing, or I hope not.

If we can't find anyone for marquee money I'd work out which of our big names would improve most by going fulltime and offer them fulltime money for 2025 and get them into the gym now.
Clydsdale, Higgins, Southwell or even Gallagher.

Article on Vette-Welsh.
Says the Knights are unable to confirm the signing yet - I assume it isn't registered yet - but other sources confirm the deal.
Says there is a shortage of specialist fullbacks and Wests, Canberra and Canterbury don't have one signed - which makes me think NSW under 19s fullback Lilly White might have people interested.
Says our spine of 1 Vette-Welsh, 6 Roche, 7 Southwell, 9 Higgins will be one of the best in the comp still.

Doesn't say if Vette-Welsh is getting Marquee money.
It would be weird if someone who wouldn't be top 5 of our players gets our top paycheck.

Re women and maternity leave how does this affect clubs and salary caps/number of roster spots?

I don't mean this in anyway sexist but say 4-5 players get pregnant mid-season how does that affect a club.

Also, if someone plays whilst pregnant and heaven forbid loses a baby what happens there?

There have been plenty of women competitions in many sports, but I doubt any have the physicality of Rugby League.

I would assume you wouldn't be allowed to play if knowingly pregnant.

Looks like replacements are allowed under the salary cap during pregnancy and while on maternity leave: https://www.nrl.com/news/2023/01/31...and-parental-policy-private-health-insurance/

The Marquee money should go to Yas if we can’t get a replacement player at least for this upcoming year
She is our best player, but i'd be tempted to give it to Jesse Southwell because she is only 20 and could benefit the most from training as a fulltime athlete year round.
Yas has a career and already makes good money from work and rep duties and has probably peaked as a player.
Hannah might benefit a lot from going fulltime and she is still young as well.

That money should go to McEwen, who will win us more games in years to come then anyone else!

Or she’l get snapped up by someone who is willing to give her the marquee.
