So then if the ball was already in the ingoal that then becomes a try? His hand and arm never actually left the ball.

Yep I think that's it. If he made that contact and it was already in the in-goal it would have just been downward pressure and a try. But I guess you can't just roll the ball forward even if you don't lose contact with the ball. Sorta makes sense when you think about it.
