NRL Round 23 - Knights Vs Raiders - 2:00pm Sunday, 9th of August - GIO Stadium

Rewatching that first try that Manuleleua set up, that was some serious footwork/change of direction at pace to find the gap. This kid is something special.
I’m a bit young to remember Andrew John’s days and golden days. Only really started to follow knights around 2009 when Gidley carved up NRL (still think we missed an opportunity that year only finishing 7th).

But I’ve never seen knights with this level of depth and quality depth and Manuleleua is more evidence of that.

Do we reckon next year McEwan will transition to a middle forward as you’d think that both manu and McEwan are too good to play little minutes off the bench

I think McEwen is almost second to Frank if he plays like this next year. How good to have back rowers that are explosive. It’s almost like we are getting what KPP should have been for us

Would rather McEwen start and moved into prop for the last 10 of the half with manu coming on and finishing the game on the edge.
1 prop swaps, McEwen spells the other, Graham/Hagan comes on through the middle and Manu punching holes on an edge

You could start Manu, let him empty the tank, and use McEwen as a bench impact middle who gives you some minutes on the edge. It’s a little easier to manage the bench rotations that way than the other way around and allows you to make a judgement call about whether to take one of your edge forwards off or leave them out there.

You could also spell Lucas in a bunch of games by doing this, which might not be a bad idea given the workload we put on him.

Would have loved to be a fly on the wall after the game. Ricky sounded pissed with big red. Basically called him out for costing them the game

Does this show how bad a fit AOB was or how good a fit Holbrook is (or both?)

I’m reluctant to call AOB a bad coach as we did have some good times but never played this tough and enterprising at same time.

Also are finals locked in? If so that’s 5/7 finals series. Many teams would love that so it always surprises me why everyone always says the “knights have had a few rough years”. Last year was awful but otherwise we aren’t a bad team
There’s been a few Freudian slips from the boys regarding AOB since Holbrook has been on board. Now my memory stinks and I can’t recall if it was Crossland or Ponga that said it but the words stuck with me. They said, “Holbrook isn’t trying to be the most important person in the room” That actually speaks volumes.

Rugby League is an egoic game and your humble characters often are overshadowed by the big hype machines. There’s a lot of humble guys at Newcastle but I think AOB played to the camera like he was a humble servant of the club but I never bought it personally. Saying things like the guys don’t know football and all the talk around how many premierships he’s been a part of. 🤷‍♂️

There was a Crossland article that spoke about the depression hangover from last year as the boys all came back to training and Holbrook noticed and was straight onto it. I can’t find it now but he said something like, “don’t be scared to lose but get excited to win” or something like that and straight away everyone moved on from the nightmare that was and got on board. He obviously sees his men as humans with emotions, needs and struggles and a great coach watches out for it all and I love what he’s brought to us. Obviously his team around him is doing a stellar job also.

Who’s the skinny guy in the coaches box with the curly Afro and moustache?

It is hard to line up the two eras but this one compares very favourably to the 95-early 2000s. We won reserves in 1995 and went on to win the premierships in 97 and 01 with a lot of juniors coming through. Through a mixture of Super League and opportunity we lost guys like Rodney Howe, Brett Kimmorely, Robbie Ross, Michael Ennis, John Morris, Jason Moodie and many more and seemed to be able to replace them with quality guys coming through. That started drying up during those Hagan years.

Our junior development is back baby. It feels like 95 again but only time will tell. We are going to lose some very good players in the next decade, getting our retention right is probably the key to exactly how successful we are. As a fanbase we are going to be disappointed to lose some guys and only to be wowed by there replacements.

There were stories around at the start of the year about Holbrook cracking jokes early in preseason and young players looking at eachother wondering if they could laugh or not.

Yeah I don’t think any of them have been slips, I think they’ve all been very deliberate digs at AOB. Greg had a pretty pointed go as well

Was an unexpected win, seemed strange, game fluctuated back and forward, don’t think we will ever see a Ponga game as bad as this one despite some real pluses, he made a few silly errors and didn’t seem to link up with others like he normally does.
Thought most played strong with lots of effort but poor old Hunt had a few problems, Sasagi gave him some lessons and Marzhew was not as effective as normal, both sides were strong on right and outplayed on left. Sharpe and Smith were good, Smith looked good slotting goals, had a chuckle at his antics at last kick, certainly got under Raiders skin. Happy for Frizell, 300th and a win and likely semi bound. Manu was good but unlike Lucas is not a 80min player YET, but will be, pack was generally very strong, Graham did well, Cant, lets hope Xrossland and Graham stay fit until Hagan is ready. Young was very good

At the game I really didn't notice the referee calls as much and it seemed fine but ill need to watch it back. Francis looked great live, he is a big boy and so strong.
Ponga best and worst on park and the game seemed to revolve around him. Im suprised Canberra didnt keep going at our left side, they were making good meters that way.
So happy for Frizz to reach 300 and get a win.
