Marathon Stadium Awards 2023!

We've been going 90 minutes so I better wrap up haha.

For the Men's Game of the Year, we had quite a few options. The 66-0 thumping of the Bulldogs that kick-started our season got 1 vote. The Round 26 win over Cronulla that sealed our spot in the finals got 3 votes. The round 21 arm wrestle win over Melbourne picked up 4 votes. But in top spot with 8 votes was our first home final since 2006 - this one had it all!

Game of the Year: Finals Week 1 vs Canberra Raiders

I have watched the game back a few times now, it was a game that Newcastle fans will never forget

Thanks James for hosting the event, it took me a while to get here from the nation's capital but now its time for the after party!

Sorry to miss the awards! Was unfortunately at work. Thanks for another fantastic year on the forum, hard to believe how long I've been around on here now.

Every award winner was warranted in my opinion whether it was what I voted for or not. 2023 was the first time in a number of years I've genuinely felt excited about the Knights and I hope to continue riding the wave and continue the good vibes next year.

Thanks for all the hard work by James and also the thread keepers Billy and Lefty :)

Where is everybody??!!! :oops::oops::oops:

Bloody hell, I've missed it ALL 😭...

Sorry I missed this last night James and my fellow forumites :(...we had a minor medical issue for one of the family late yesterday - nothing major but did require a trip (and long wait) in A & E.

Anyway, glad to see the winners list and I think I was on a roll with around 95% success on the awards selections :p

Does make you reflect on what an awesome year the club and this forum has had on the field...

And while the Awards are for the players, I'd also like to issue a serious shout out to O'Brien, McDermott, Green, Jay and others in the NRL ranks plus Griffith and the NRLW coaching staff and also to Parr and the others who have contributed to the season we've had as a club.

This has been an absolutely pivotal year for this club and I hope we can look back in 5 years time and be able to say that 'this was the season that it all changed for the Newcastle Knights!'

Oh no, I hope everything is ok after the A&E visit!

I was looking at the final ratings for our player of the year, thought it was interesting that Marzhew got 14 points and Young only 4. And added to that Young barely got any votes in matches that he didn’t get final points in. Maybe a sign he won’t be super badly missed?

Also seemed like Fitzgibbon was way too low on 2 points.

No - all good on the medical front, thanks 👍

Re Young - I think he is still developing and has what it takes to be a star at the Roosters...we still didn't effectively know how to use him to his full potential as an attacking weapon, but I reckon Robinson will take him to another level next year (IF he doesn't get too caught up in the Sydney lifestyle) - I honestly think he could be one of the greats by the end of his career, if he doesn't succumb to any major injuries. The fact his brother will be there should also likely be a settling influence on his maturity...not that he doesn't already seem to have a pretty level head for his age.

On Fitzgibbon - I think the main reason he sat so low was the lack of continuous time on the paddock...but I think it was the best football I've seen him play for the Knights in 2023, while he was on the field. I reckon he will absolutely smash it in England and although he is 29, I'll also tip he will get offers to come back and play in the NRL before the 2024 season is done next year but it won't be with the Knights - I could see somebody like the Tigers making him an offer

Damn, missed out on this last night.

Looking through the comments in this thread, all the winners deserved their awards and well done to James for putting this together.

Hopefully for the Knights, 2024 can continue the good form from 2023 and make that push to the top 4.

Been a good season everyone!
