Kyle McCarthy discussion

Been said that Sharpe was originally a 7 in his younger days, this is our position of need, could he be considered, tried at 7 in off season and if no super star is available give him a crack, he seems quite adaptable and he has wing or f/b to fall back on

Why does he think a Superleague team will happily give up a key member of their spine at a moment’s notice? Madness!

Insane if that's what he said. I don't get this argument he needs to play fullback. That might be his best position but if he's going great at wing for us why would that not be good enough?
lol I know. Sharpe is already in our top 13 best players. He’s not going to develop in an inferior competition

Apparently played a lot of juniors in the halves.
So not too much of a stretch.

Also, we are desperate for a quality half.
Not sure Obrien is the man to develop one, though
He played all his juniors in the halves before joining the Knights, but he said the other day he started in Mathews in the halves and was moved to fullback when someone got injured and played there ever since - so fullback since he was 15.

Just looked up Sharpe's Mathews games.
He started as 7 alongside Taj Blackman in 6 in 4 games in 2020 before the season was abandoned. Was under 16s.
In 2021 he started as fullback from game 1 with Taj Blackman in 7 and Jye Linnane in 6. The comp was changed to under 17s.

Article that quotes McCarthy about his rapid rise and first game.

The interesting bit of news in the article is that he has recently signed till the end of 2027, but it doesn't say what sort of contract in which year, but does say he now joins the firstgrade training squad.

That’s excellent news.

We are starting to improve our roster. Obviously we still need a quality halfback and a better preforming forward pack.

Defensive stats at centre in 2024 - 10 reserve grade games and 1 firtgrade. I didn't list the games at wing.

round 3 - 9 tackles - 0 missed
round 4 - 10 tackles - 3 missed - 3 ineffective
round 5 - 17 tackles - 3 missed
round 6 - 12 tackles - 4 missed - 1 ineffective
round 7 - 7 tackles - 2 missed - 1 ineffective
round 13 - 7 tackles - 2 missed
round 14 - 19 tackles - 3 missed - 2 ineffective
round 19 - 14 tackles - 3 missed - 1 ineffective
round 20 - 10 tackles - 2 missed - 1 ineffective

Added to the top squad and started working with defensive coach McDermott

round 22 - 20 tackles - 1 missed - 1 ineffective
round 24 1st grade - 21 tackles - 1 missed - 1 ineffective

So his two best defensive games have come since he got the development contract after Myers left and he started working with the defensive coach.
He defended very well against some strong attack in the Cronulla game.
The guy is a quick learner. Last year I was saying you could actually see him improve every game.

Think I saw more in that one game to suggest he might have an NRL career than every game I've seen of Maps put together.
100%. IMO you can make the same judgment based on McCarthy's Cup resume to date as well.

I don't mean any disrespect to Maps but I really get the vibe that he had a lot of fortunate circumstances fall in his favour to land his initial debut, and he sorta lived off that ever since.

Never really dominated Reserve grade or even Flegg, did some decent things at every level but I'd be surprised if anyone ever looked at him in the lower grades and went "oh that's a future 200 gamer right there".

Both McCarthy and Fletcher Myers were guys you looked at in reserves and could see something there even if they weren't finished products. Genuine athletes with the ability to routinely bust tackles and score tries.

It's a very surface level stat analysis but comparing the three: Mapapalangi 23 NSW Cup games (6 tries), McCarthy 23 games (12 tries), Myers 25 games (14 tries).

McCarthy did impress me after a bit of a shaky start, but i also remember Maps debut 2 yrs ago was impressive too. I just think due to injuries and some mistakes, his confidence is shot at the moment.
