Knights Podcasts!

Very interesting, easy to see why the club’s probably in the best position it’s ever been in now. Loved his confidence that they could beat any team on their day at full strength.

Clearly Holbrook’s had a massive effect too. Just hearing the difference in KP from last year to this year. You can see the effect on all the players.

Goes to show you don’t necessarily need hard asses everywhere to get results either. Holbrook, Brown and KP being very similar, easy going guys clearly works for them and that’s what matters.
The chat about the change in him last season to this one, hard not to link it to Kalyn’s chat about how Holbrook tells him to “just be you”. Maybe under AOB he thought that he had to act a certain way as the captain.

It reminds me of changes the Blackcaps made in the mid-2010s. They went from trying to be a tough team like Australia because they thought that would bring them similar success, into talking about wanting to go out there and express themselves, through playing their natural game and displaying their skills. Accepting it won’t always go right and there will be failures, but giving players a long leash and letting them feel comfortable with their spot in the team. It’s definitely led to a decade now that’s probably been the best in their history.

If you look at Kane Williamson who just retired, he’s not a natural “follow me” type leader, but he’s probably the most successful captain NZ has ever had.

Very different sports, but maybe the philosophy is the same.

Yep think that’s pretty apparent. Seemed to be the big problem with AOB, him not understanding his players, or their strengths and weaknesses. To me he just didn’t seem like a people person who understood that players aren’t a monolith. 6 years with them and somehow not learning a thing or changing a thing, really is quite something.

Just had his mind set on a particular method. A method that didn’t work for everyone nor do I think it even worked for him. Dare say he was just trying to replicate Bellamy, without all the other factors that made Bellamy a success eg Cameron Smith

Leadership can clearly come in different forms but there’s absolutely no point copying someone else’s style if it doesn’t suit you or your players. Clearly Holbrook has his own style which happens to suit KP and Brown very well and he’s clearly keyed in on what the rest of the teams needs as well

Interesting parts of conversation were that he seemed to want to say/hint that in next 1-3 years he thinks we could be comp winners but obviously doesn’t want to have that spoken out aloud and on record.
And thatalready pretty much tapped out for 2027 cap so that would assume someone like Friz is still relying on Will Sullivan being medically retired to allow his wage($150-200k) probably and a lot of young guys filling roles on pretty much minimum wage
Also when he talked something about not really missing out or regretting players going and the pathways when likes of Sutton, linnane,Talty for example in last year or so have progressed to first graders, maybe that was also an AOB and Sully thing which now with Holbrook could be better

We seem to have outside backs and and a few edge guys really lined up In younger grades, but still worried about middles and halves from flegg up at moment but interesting to watch it all unfold
