Kalyn Ponga discussion

If you’re so proud to represent your heritage why wait so long?.

1000% .

Lets make it a bit more fair dinkum for the fans and it would entirely take the confusion out of it if they declared once over 18 in the NRL systems. No clauses no BS, you play for where you declare.

Origin open to everyone again declare where your loyalty is and no get out clauses there either.

How many players have left the Australian team? The Kiwis have been smashed over the years with defections to Tonga, Samoa, Australia (because of Origin) ... personally I don't mind, because I only want people fully committed to the NZ side. And those players leaving to the Pacific Island squads is what has made international league what it is now, there's no longer just two or three sides capable of putting on a great performance.

But it's funny that it's only such an issue now that Haas has left Australia, and Ponga has possibly got the Kiwis on his mind.

Nationality is never going to be a black and white (ha) thing, if you're born in one country, live in another, and your entire family is immersed in the culture of your heritage - parents or grandparent's place of birth - then people will change their view on who they want to represent over the years. Personally I'd rather have someone playing for the side they're passionate for, instead of sticking to a bunch of arbitrary rules. In a lot of ways, I see International League as a leader in this area. With the world becoming more globalised, I think we'll see more of it in other sports. And if it benefits the competitiveness of our international game, then so much the better.

Both Ponga and Sharpe are being given as much time as possible to get back to full fitness before they do full contact.

I'd rather they sit out till round 10 than come back a minute earlier than they have to and re-injure themselves.

Text of the article on the Knights website a few weeks ago:

nib Newcastle Knights captain Kalyn Ponga has returned to pre-season in a modified training program, as he progresses steadily through his rehabilitation from a Lisfranc injury.

The Club has continued to take a measured approach, given the nature of the injury.

As part of his management plan, he will use a protective boot at times, to assist with foot soreness and ensure his ongoing recovery is optimised.

The expectation is that Kalyn will return to full training in the new year.

SEN obviously haven't seen Ponga struggle when in the halves the last two times he's played there.
