Kalyn Ponga discussion

The biggest and most obvious difference is that the ball always looks like it’s pointing where it should be when he’s setting up on the broadcast. I feel like a lot of us always knew if he was going to miss before he kicked it.

It’s great news that he’s actively enjoying it because he’s always struck me as a great natural striker of the ball who was doing it because he was good at it rather than because he liked it.

Hopefully we no longer have to hear any more complaints about how much he’s on.

We should probably be paying him more to play with this lot. He’s the only high priced player that has to do it all on his own. Everyone has some help. Nobody else would come here and do the same thing.

Just hope he doesn’t get fed up with it and leave but I wouldn’t blame him if he did.

I think he’s the best player in the sport atm. He’s a moral to come up with 2 unassisted line breaks every game at this point. That’s absurd stuff, considering how heavily marked he always is.

Billy Slater has heavily hinted that he’s gonna stick strong with Reece Walsh, which is just a mistake, I don’t care what anybody says. If Ponga was the one playing off the back of Ezra Mam and Adam Reynolds they would have won that grand final last year and won it well.

Completely agree switch KP with any fullback in the comp and their side would improve. Put any other fullback behind our team and we’d be a lot worse.

Yeah I think they’ll be loyal to Walsh which probably is a good thing for the Knights but KP deserves to be picked.

Yeah, my thought exactly. JP should be the Q’land #1 but him not being is a huge bonus for Newcastle. Would be very surprised to if KP isn’t the Australian Full Back for the end of season games.

Not ideal

I’m an idiot so could someone break this down for me?…

A 3rd party has promised something to Kalyn and it’s fallen through and as a result the Knights will have to honour that through the salary cap?

Sorry if I’m way off
That’s what it sounds like. Think its from his last contract. Sounds like they’re saying the Knights can absorb it in the cap which I didn’t know was allowed.

I don’t think the Knights are obligated to but at the same time they can’t really risk pissing him off and someone else swooping in

The Knights only have to include it in the cap if they’re trying to keep the Pongas happy as far as I’m aware. I don’t think third party deals are that enforceable.

If we get another long term injury with Ponga does the organisation wonder if it’s worth it? We could have two or more great players for the price of the one, minus Tinkler 2.0 which is his father.

I’ll likely get torn to shreds, I’m a huge fan and have a Kalyn Bobble head and all the other crap but honestly the bang for the buck is not happening.

I believe the investigation is concerned with whether the 3rd party deal was in fact at "arm's length" from the club - If the NRL deems the deal wasn't at arms length based on this supposed 'new information' that has since come to light then they can include the deal in our cap.

This could really hit the fan.

There are a few things at play here and reading the article there is mention of the Knights being forced to absorb the 6 figure sum in to their salary cap. i can't see how the NRL can make that happen!

TPA's are all meant to be at arms length and not an inducement for a player to sign for a club. Lets pretend that actually occurs in the NRL, so working under that belief, which is the belief the NRL wants us all to stay with, as all TPA's are registered with the NRL and all contracts are ratified by the NRL, so with all that in mind, how can the NRL now turn around and say that TPA was money KP should have gotten as payment for playing for Newcastle, and then make that money come under the cap? They can't, unless at the same time they are going to blow this up in to a massive salary cap scandal which they don't want.

So far Newcastle is playing a straight bat, nothing to do with us sir, TPA is between the company and KP's manager sir!

For what it’s worth, Gus on 100% Footy said he thought it was very unlikely the Knights did anything wrong, and that the question of payment of that deal is kind of actually a problem for Kalyn and his management. Third party deals are supposed to be for work done by that player for the sponsor, it may actually be the case that said party feels that Kalyn didn’t hold up his end of the deal. Or maybe they’re just crooks.
