Kai Pearce-Paul discussion

Potentially good news on the KPP retention front: the Roosters have identified Kotoni Staggs as their #1 recruitment target come November 1.

Does make sense as their big losses are both centres, and they have a lot of back row options/prospects already, but for my money Kai is a better prospect than anything they’ve got there.

It’s the Roosters they’ll sign Staggs, KPP, Cleary and Haas and still have left over money from when Brad Taikarangi left 10 years ago.

They have to keep some money aside to resign Manu once he is off contract in May next year.

This will be the biggest rort of all. He's worth 1.2 to any club. He'll get 1 mill for his excursion in to japanese rugby, then sign back at the roosters for maybe 800k for three years and won't be any worse off.

Sign both of them now please. After today's loss I wouldn't be surprised if they both walked.
I was thinking today and I came up with this horror scenario which is entirely possible, hear me out…

You are two young English internationals at the top of your game and you get approached by a club from the greatest rugby league comp in the world. Promises are made and it’s pointed out that Voldemort already plays here, is happy, loving it and excelling. You both sign on. A year goes by and your new club has just had the most remarkable season in decades but it’s bittersweet as Voldemort has signed on elsewhere. Also the club has signed another half and competition in the back row will be a bit stiffer than it was a year ago. These things happen you say!

You show up for pre season and have to sheepishly approach the new club with hat in hand and tell them you are not 100% fit as assumed and require surgery. Maybe that gets a few guys offside? Maybe it doesn’t. The club tells the papers that competition for spots is healthy and bring out the best out of all vying for spots.

The reality is you are a million miles from home in a place you’ve never been. For the tall guy he’s getting a run but he’s not getting any support, not what he was used to at home. For the short guy he hasn’t even had a run which for him is disappointing because when he signed on he assumed the spot was his. (Maybe not all his fault, possibly likely something he was told to get a signature). Egos flare at training and some barbs are starting to get traded until someone uppercuts you. A renowned hot head who’s been given the arse from every club previous and voted the biggest d!ck head in the game in BOTH leagues!

I don’t think it would be a stretch to assume that a phone call or two would have been made back home where the topic goes something like, “it’s not what I had expected, some of the guys are ****wits, the coach seems to be a twit and keeps feeding me s*** whenever I ask him questions, the guys don’t seem to get it, it’s really expensive here and I don’t know if this is for me”

Personally I don’t think either of these guys will stay on here.

Really don’t think our coach is going to change it for anyone.

I understand what you are saying, but they are not the reason we are failing and both are putting in big time, one successful but still fitting in the other not quite the complete player but both seem committed and trying.

Have a lie down mate

The perfect time to extend him is now.

We already know he's good enough to extend. By waiting, all we're doing is increasing his profile, his price and reducing the likelihood of keeping him.

We were dumb enough to take the risk with Voldermort and it burnt us about as badly as a club can be burnt imo. Something tells me we're not the type of club to learn from past mistakes.
Was obvious then. Idiotic from the club to sit on their hands. It makes so little sense that it's difficult to come up with good reasons to wait that aren't clearly outweighed by the bad reasons.

KPP is a gun sign him up! I reckon next year he will a lot better too!

Toohey said he's on a pretty decent whack for next year already, which limits our chances to upgrade him early.

Mate, what don't you understand about how contracts work?

Players aren't indentured servants, they're free to sign wherever they want. Every bit of available evidence suggests that we tried hard to resign Dom well before he was able to go to market.

He didn't want to sign here. He wanted to be in Sydney. He took less money to move to Sydney. It's totally fair to be upset that our club isn't seen as attractive enough for him to want to stay here - that's something they should work hard to improve. But this narrative that the club 'idiotically sat on their hands and waited too long' is objectively false. He just didn't want to be here.

This isn't Madden or FIFA - you can't just come in with an upgraded contract early and have your AI sim sign the contract.

We offered the Dark Lord something with a 5' infront of it. Roosters offered something with a 7' infront it. That's why he left. I've come to terms with that. We move on.

How contracts operate is that they provide benefit to the parties within the contract. The Newcastle Knights being one of the parties are at an advantage in being able to negotiate with the player before competing interests can make a bid. My gripe is that the club has yet to take that advantage.

What they've seemingly decided to do was make absolutely sure that he is worth more than what they're currently paying him before offering him an extension and presumably a nominal upgrade. The idea being that they take no further contractual risk with that player.
In hindsight, I think most people would agree that it is now a good idea to take that risk. My point is, it's been pretty obvious for a while now but the club seems to be sitting on its hands.. Fairly black and white

I doubt those 5 & 7 numbers are accurate.

How do you know that the club hasn't offered KPP an extension?

Can you point to something that suggests this is the true story? If it is, I'll recant and say you're totally right.

But everything I remember reading was that we made multiple offers, that his management refused to engage and wanted to 'go to the open market', and that he ended up signing with the Roosters for less than we had offered.
