James Schiller discussion

Knight #354.

Very pleased with Schill so far. Maybe not quite the yardage worker I thought he was - he had great metres per game numbers at Canberra in both Cup and the NRL, but said numbers are maybe inflated a bit by long line breaks. Probably not going to bust heaps of tackles and win penalties coming out of trouble like Greg, but he always seems like a threat to come up with a break out of nothing.

In this respect he feels more like a direct replacement for the Fletcher Sharpe version of our right wing spot than the Dom Young one. But either way he clearly has a lot of pace and skill.

Very shrewd pickup, I’m very happy we picked up a surplus to requirements outside back hungry for his shot rather than paying a big contract to Turuva (who probably looked better than he is because he was at Penrith). Already he’s defending way better than he did at Canberra and aside from the weird thing last night where he batted back a kick he probably could have just caught and scored a try, hasn’t really put a foot wrong in the NRL so far.

Great player, him and marzew give us a clear identity. When it comes to hard running wingers, we surely have to be up there with the best. Marzew needs no explanation, but schiller knocked Crighton on his ***, and he bruises everyone he contacts.

Oppositions know that there are no easy tackles with the knights now

I was actually thinking on Thursday, probably my one criticism of Schiller is that I don’t think he’s particularly strong taking runs out of our own end. He’s definitely getting in there and having a go but doesn’t seem very effective for his size. Hopefully that can improve because he looks to be a great fit in every other way.

I get what you mean, I think he is inconsistent. Some runs are not to effective which I gloss over, but each game he definitely has a moment. Just needs to do more often which I am sure he will as well get deeper into the season

He runs too upright, makes it easy for teams to push him back once they get a hold of him. He’s more dangerous when he takes off across field and then tries to cut back into a gap than when he just takes a one-out hitup into the defensive line, though obviously that’s always a risk.

He is better running left to right but was regularly starting on the left of the ruck the other night. He'll be fine in the long run.

Although I saw Schiller knock Crichton backwards in contact during the Roosters last trial game against the Knights.
He is best when he leans into the defence on contact.

Article that says Young and Marzhew could be our wingers in 2 weeks, but also says Schiller and Hunt have things to offer.

I think Schiller has gone from pretty average to one of our better performers in the last month.

The article says Schiller was playing both wing and centre in Canberra. I'd keep him as a centre till Best comes back.

Yep straight into Bradman's spot once we have Greg and Dom.
Really interesting and under-remarked on thing is that Schiller has been making good defensive reads for the last few weeks all of a sudden. Don't know if that's AOB once again proving himself to be good with outside backs, or it's just Schiller benefiting from Dane Gagai School.

Surely the progression for Schiller is Centre inside Dom. He's had some great defensive reads over the last few weeks & puts in a lot of extra effort, similar to Gags. Great development to have him working with Gags.

great minds.

Yep from a guy who had Greg-like habits of flying in at nobody and opening a saloon passage to the line, to one who's flying in and shutting stuff down.

I’d love to see a good half back work with him. Put some nicely placed bombs into his corner I reckon he pays for himself pretty quickly.

Schiller should be centre this week alongside Gagai, Marzhew at wing if ok with Hunt or McCarthy right wing the other left if Marzhew not ready.
Probably McCarthy right and Hunt covering Marzhew.
Could we consider ESL to relieve KPP who could cover prop rotation

Showed a lot of heart last night to come back after a difficult first half. Always a tough ask to switch between centre and wing when you've been playing exclusively one or the other. Back on the wing he came up with some crucial plays in the second 40. Hope he gets a lot of support from everyone at the club, and the fans! :)

He strikes me as a bit of a rocks and diamonds player generally, he is going to do some good stuff sometimes and probably some bad stuff now and again. He is the new SKD.

What i did notice after an error early in the game is he put some pretty big shots on to try and make up for it and didn't go into his shell which is a good trait to have.

Indeed he did, good on him for showing how mentally tough he is.

I think we all get carried away in the heat of the moment and bag players out because we care so much but I'm sure nobody on here wishes any harm or ill towards any player.
