Hooking options

Newcastle Herald reporting that Clydsdale is unlikely to play again this season due to a syndesmosis injury or a high ankle sprain.

I think the major issue and most disappointing thing is we are goin to really suck next year without a decent hooker. It's a massive fail on the clubs behalf investing on kurt being the savour when he hasn't proven his body is up to it. For someone of Bennett stature it really is rubbish recruiting.

It's getting a bit ridiculous when you need a fulltime replacement for Kurt because he's out so often. I guess there isn't much anyone can do about it unless he decides to hang up the boots.
 
Would of loved to keep travis waddell but maybe try AJ Davis or one of the young halves in the hooking role for the last regular season game
 
It will be Costigan for sure! Bennett has done it on a fair few occasions already. Buds to play 65 minutes and Costigan can rotate off the bench at hooker and FR.
 
I actually give Costigan a lot of credit for how he's gone about his footy. He copped the dropping to NSW Cup and being told he wasn't wanted on the chin and has lifted since. Almost every game he shortens a couple up with big hits.

I agree he has lifted his game a lot, when really he could just relax and wait for his paid holiday..

I'm also happy with Tets, I think he has potential if he gets fit enough. Runs very straight and hard :)
 
I cringe whenever Costigan tries to pass so I really hope he's not playing hooker. I remember his last game there when Wayne picked him and he had a shocker. I'll be surprised if he gets another go.

He's decent when his game is simplified and all he's got to do is run hard and tackle hard.

I don't know why Wayne isn't a fan, but Chris Adams is the obvious answer.
Last time he got a shot at firstgrade he went reasonably well, but he was not long back from injury and not completely match fit and was a bit rusty.
Right now he has been injury free for probably the longest period he has had while at the club and he is one of our best every week in NSW cup.
The best form of his life is right now. He is one of the best pound for pound defenders at the club in any position and he is our second best dummy half after Bedsy.
He was a bit of a ball hog who backed himself too much, and I think ignoring game plans to go himself might be the reason Bennett is not a fan, but I think Stone has got that out of his game mostly.
 
This will be me IF Wayne does pick Costigan as Hooker.

First choice:
Gidley (?)
Gower (?)
Hilder

Young guns (all capable to step up to first grade if needed):
Clydsdale
Adams
Redman

Poor options:
Waddell

Next year our #9 could change completely. Depending on how bad Gidley's injury is and whether or not Gower retires, I would actually love to see Clydsdale used over Waddell. The guy may only have 1 or 2 games under his belt but from those games he has played plus the season he has had before being injured, it is clear that he provides great service from dummy half, has a great passing game, can kick, score tries and even play in the halves if needed.

As a huge Gidley fan, I'd have him first over everyone but he missed most of 2012, half of this year and now is out for the rest of the season. If his recovery isn't speedy and he doesn't get a full off season, sadly I can see him playing a few games then getting injured again, play off the bench or retire.

I hope our youth is bleed soon otherwise we'll lose them like we have lost Mata'utia and maybe his brothers, Naiqama, Davis (?) etc. Waddell is such a waste a provides no quality service, he's poor.

Which leaves Redman and Adams. Both are behind Clydsdale IMO and if Gower retires or plays on he'll be used at hooker or half depending on Roberts' situation.
 
Adams, Redman or Davis. All in good form, all would bring some enthusiasm. Bennett said he got fed up with playing non-hookers at hooker so please don't put Hilder or Costigan there.

Thats why clysdale got his early start, but he is out for the year along with gidley and gower

doesnt leave us many options, we should have team announcement soon
 
If Gidley is out for an extended period I wouldn't mind this next year

6. Mullen
7. Dobson
9. Clydsdale
14. Roberts

I'd be confident with Clydsdale starting, we'll never know if he can live up to the hype if he doesn't get a proper shot. Bedsy has been working with him for 2 years and he'll surely be spending even more time with him over the next pre-season.
