Fletcher Sharpe discussion

Honest Q.

Why are we saying Sharpe as a half?

Cause he has shown to have a good running game?

In juniors he's definitely gotten better with his pass selection at FB but at 5/8 complete different story.

Find it odd we've kept the chat up about him playing anything other than FB or wing.

Probably because Obi was talking it up a couple of weeks back? Said he came here as a half?

He transitioned to firstgrade and to the wing absolutely seamlessly. It's pretty clear he has great footy instincts and can easily slip into any role.
Obviously, the halves are the ultimate test for any young player, but it won't cost us a penny to give him a couple of months training at half to see if his footy IQ is up to it, especially when he's shown he can play wing like a veteran with zero experience, so we can always just put him back there 5 minutes before season kickoff, and he'd handle that fine.
Use the off season to run the Ferrari around the test track and find out what top speed is.

As long as a decision is made before xmas on where to play him. As in after xmas the team needs to know who their halves are and concentrate on combos.
Not a slight on Sharpe as, as you said he footy smarts wise is seemingly capable in any position.
My biggest wrap on him from this yr is how well he defended on the wing. Like he monstered a potential rookie of the yr contender in Bostock in final regular season game and handled a huge pressure match in North Qld without issue.

Poor ole Schiller prob thought he had a wing spot secured for next season. Sharpe won't lose that position in off season.

From interviews with Schiller the club seems to have included a promise to play centre as part of contract negotiations..

Schiller was signed when Gagai was still off-contract so that may have been the plan at the time. Won’t be happening now though, he’ll either be on the wing or in reserve grade.

Gagai wing maybe. Schiller couldn’t ask for a better guy to scream where to go defensively at him.

There’s a very good chance Billy is right and they look at Fletch as a guy who has too much going for him to leave him on the wing.

The one thing which gives me a bit of pause with Will Pryce is that where he looks most comfortable (to me) is attacking similar channels of the field to KP’s preferred spots. Would they cannibalise each other’s role a bit?

A big frustration a lot of fans have with KP is that he’s not as adept at attacking that middle third, playing off the back of offloads etc as more traditional fullbacks like Teddy, Pappy, even Edwards. It’s not Kalyn’s natural game.

It’s not really Reece Walsh’s natural game either - but when they’ve been at their most lethal is when they’ve had Mam as that direct running threat, always testing inside shoulders and chasing offloads. I’ve long thought that’s one kind of player we need to find to pair with KP.

Would Fletch be better in that role than Pryce?

Finding that point of difference is definitely one thing this off season should be about. The next priority after finding the best halfback we possibly can.

If Schiller has been promised a centre spot so what happens to Gagai to wing or Sharpe to ????? , let’s be realistic if Schiller outplays either then he is in but if not then it’s Sharpe and Gagai.
My thoughts are that Schiller is the replacement for Gagai, BIG boots to fill

Schiller is next man up in the outside backs at this stage. All of the guys there deserve their spots and he’s gonna have to wait for an injury or form drop to get a start.

Schiller is definitely nrl quality seems like after he signed Ricky didn’t pick him perfect player to have to cover 1-5 how many times this year did we have our full squad all players missed games sharpe will benefit being on wing for a full season

Raiders fans say he is a poor defender.
That could be them being filthy or it could be true.
If true we wouldn't want him at centre yet.

I haven't watched enough of him to make my own decision.

I Personally don't think we lose out on having either Schiller or Sharpe on the wing spot. Heights advantage to Schiller, both strong runner, both very fast.

Considering how well Sharpe went its hard to move him

However the carrot is there to have him playing FB/5/8 role in Cup and developing that for when KP isn't available.

All this rumour of Roosters wanting to make a play at KP in years to come has me feeling like - go for it, if he does go then we have some incredible talent sitting behind him.
