Dylan Brown discussion

very brief snippet on Backstage with Ryles about Brown.
Ryles mentioned he was “open and honest” about 5 too many times for my liking. But didn’t have a bad word to say about Brown.

Essentially said in June, approaching deadline it became evident he had a chance to leave, and Ryles was “open and honest” about the uncertainty around his playing time. brown apparently said all good, he would see out the year and go wherever was best for the team.

Approaching the end, asked if he could play the last game at 6, and Ryles agreed (they planned for Joash to get surgery in the last round , but his surgery was cancelled so he ended up being available).

Arthur looks good in NSW Cup. But FG he seems to fall very short in many areas of competition. I'm genuinely worried that he won't ever make that transition, despite his age, which granted is a huge factor
So you're pretty much writing off a 20 year old hooker (yes still eligible for flegg) saying he's falling short despite him only playing 5 nrl games which were all off the bench, 2 for a wooden spoon side (so behind a very poor pack) and 3 behind parra who came 15th that year?? I think anyone with this negative opinion needs to calm down, or we can let him go like we do with people that age and see him blossom elsewhere if we aren't willing to give him a shot (for example Starling, Hoskins, Talty, Sasagi, Meaney, Keeley, Donoghoe... can nearly add Saulo, To'a, Levi too)

him being open and honest with brown still doesn't change the fact he refused to play his best 6 option and one of his best attacker nearly all season and they just missed out on finals... might, and yes I said might be good for them long term but this season it definitely wasn't

And playing him out of position

Loved watching play his natural game and not be bound by Ryles, he was always looking and scheming, he popped up at first receiver some times and sometimes he went back to second, he toke it on himself to hit a nice banana kick for a try.

Showed hunger when he ran and jumped to grab the ball for a try, his running game and step looked deadly, can’t wait to see him in the Knights colours.

I think he will benefit heavily from an attacking minded coach like Holbrook

Yeah I know nobody on here rates him as a first receiver, but there were definitely elements of him doing it on Sunday. The try from his kick before halftime, he really took charge in that moment. But as you mention he did it at times in less dramatic moments, too.

I think what he said in the interview a week or so ago is true, halves are taking a more shared role in the lead playmaker stakes. I guess the problem is if he's with Sharpe then it's not going to be even, he'll have to do most things. But I do think he has it in him!

Apart from all that, after a very tough year where he was the stand-out performer for the Eels in 2024, then a year of being treated really poorly this season, his match was really impressive. After the game on the NZ coverage, Foran was saying during the week he could tell Brown had a point to prove and was going to have a huge game.

I do wonder/hope/pray that he's entering the stage of his career where he just grabs games by the scruff of the neck, takes control and has a huge influence on results. Sunday showed he is more than capable of that.

Im not writing him off, still have hopes for him, just not as confident as I used to be with him

You said you think he’ll get released at the end of 2026?
Yea I think its something that may happen if he doesnt show immediate improvement, not because i think that's necessarily fair but mostly because we're short on 9s and need to him to be able to play FG next season and if he looks like hes 'years away from getting up to speed' i can see POS bringing someone else in
