Dane Gagai Re-Signs with Knights until 2017

Mata'utia negotiations ongoing

Tue 30th September, 10:00AM

The Newcastle Knights remain in contract negotiations with Chanel, Pat and Sione Mata'utia.

The three brothers are currently signed with the Club until the end of season 2015.

"Our negotiations with Chanel, Pat and Sione are ongoing and we are confident they will remain at the Club long term," CEO Matt Gidley said on Tuesday.

Makes you question the reasons behind junior development hey... maybe a draft will work, that way there would be no reason for clubs to fund any jnr development programs the nrl would have to fund them..

im calling bull**** atm

It'd be quite the conspiracy theory that since the NRL own us, they secretly want the Mata'utias to leave in order to garner support for the draft.

Wouldn't put it past those muppets though.

Imo a draft may work in distributing young players amongst clubs, but once they reach the end of their first contract, they will be off wherever they want. You can't manufacture a link between a player and a city just by relocating someone.

Hell, the Mata'utias have been here for years and we've developed them from scratch, and they still don't seem to have a connection with the club that can't be bought out.

A draft would be the end of us for good.

Central coast knights ???? Enter Koukash

I won't be satisfied until we bring back the club legend Greg Smith.

I think what is needed is an award for the biggest lie told by the media over a 12 month period. It would of course have to be "The Greg Smith Hyperbole Award". The DT is off and running.

Winner for the 20th consecutive year - the Daily Telegraph!

EXTEND Kurt!!!??? God help us. We're going to have to shoe horn him out of here as it is - don't encourage him!

As much as he looked great when he returned to fb at the end of this year, he really does mess things up with Sione being here. I mean you can just imagine Sione thinking is Kurt gonna leave, or sign a one or two year extension, and I'm gonna sign a contract and still be stuck behind him.

Then of course there's the CEO-Captain conflict of interest, which further complicates matters. Is Matt going to be the one who tells Kurt to head to the ESL?

Everyone needs to listen to this

The guy who wrote the article is saying that it's likely a negotiating tactic by their manager to hurry the new deal along. The Knights have been trying for months to re-sign them but the manager is yet to agree on anything. The boys are said to be "desperate" to stay in Newcastle, they've told Gidley they want to stay and the Knights are confident they'll be re-signed long term.

I feel like bagging the manager but he's doing a damn good job getting what he wants for the boys and rightly so, that's what he's paid for. I think we just have to be a little patient. This will no doubt speed up the process. I have little doubt we'll hear the boys have "backflipped" in the coming weeks.

Ends up being a nothing story in the end. Can't believe how quickly people were to react after what's been said today, especially the bulldogs band wagoners who hadn't existed before last weekend saying it was a sure thing.

The most likely reason the manager doesn't want them to put pen to paper in a hurry is that the boys are rapidly rising in value.
Sione has gone from being worth 100k a season to 400k in 6 months.
Chanel has gone from 60k to 300k.
Pat has gone from 60k to 150k, and will probably be a firstgrader and worth 300k next year.
The manager will be seeing the dollar signs clicking over, and will want to wait and see where they stop.

Understandable but there is still a lot of risk and developement involved. People forget Sione just turned 18 and may not even and probably shouldn't be rushed into a regular first grade spot. It's a long season, there's time.
Though if another club decides it's worth it and is willing to foot the dollars then good for them. This would be a perfect example of where the salary cap should reward a team for developing those players where we could offer a bit more then rivals but it should take a bit less room out of the cap then it would for a rival.

It's a negotiating tactic by the manager to hurry things along, but he's the one that's been dragging his heals? This makes no sense ...

How is it a nothing story? Once again we've come out looking totally clueless as a club and are in damage control.

I reckon they'll stay, but because of all this though, unfortunately I think we're going to be paying Chanel & Pat overs, Sione will be worth the money but they are all being shopped around as a package, so we're going to have to pay all 3 big money just so we can keep Sione.

Would it even be a backflip I seriously doubt anythings been signed at all yet!

It wouldn't be a backflip but that's what the papers will probably say when the boys re-sign after already declaring they're going to the Dogs.

Yeah it's odd. The Knights have put forward deals but apparently the manager hasn't accepted it. Who knows what's going on, maybe he's waiting for a counter-offer and this is his way to hurry it up. Negotiating long term deals for 3 people at once would take time. Hopefully the frustration from both sides don't boil over and we can get it sorted asap.
