Dane Gagai Re-Signs with Knights until 2017

Umm about this time last year when they were saying a different person every day for 3-4 days in a row that they were a done deal to coach the Cowboys...
Oh yeah I remember that. I have to do a review with my boss every year. How do these guys survive theirs? lol

And these Mata'utia boys really are still kids eh? Signing something written by another club without knowing what they're signing. Or isn't it their manager's job to tell them about it?

And the Tinkler/HSG days are truly over now. We're back to being run by novocastrian amateurs...

Ahh right, read the 4 years as 3 years...

Still, that's a lot of money for an 18 year old
I don't think it will be big money by 2019. The salary cap will be upwards of 10 mill by then, and all the top players will be on a million +. If Sione turns out as good as we think, 450k will be a steal for 2019.

You give the Tinkler years a lot of credit!

Report in the Newcastle Herald says the Bulldogs CEO denies lodging any paperwork with the NRL, and an NRL spokesperson says they haven't received anything ...

Could be layered? ie $200k in year 1 stepping up to $600k in year 4.

It's a lot of money for 99% of the Australian population let alone an 18 year old... that's about what the PM gets. Good luck to him ;)

Let them go. Chanel and Pat are ''dime a dozen'' players and while Sione does look better than them he's no lock to be a superstar. It may suck to lose some local boys but they should want to stay and be proud to play for us. Look at the young group Souths have. All you hear from guys like Reynold, Walker, Johnston etc is how much they love the club and all they ever wanted to do was play for Souths. Players with that attitude will stay for a price that's competitive, often unders, and not use sly tactics to try and drive up their price.

I dunno, I think from what Matt Gidley said they really want to stay, but I suspect their manager and mum are probably pulling them all in different directions, plus the plan to keep them together further complicates things.

I think it would be fairly disastrous in many ways if they left.

I don't know why any of the 3 would want to sign a 4 year deal at this point of their career.
By age 23 Sione could be a superstar and worth a million dollars, and the other two are definately on the rise as well.
4 year deals are for guys at the peak of their game - not for kids on the rise.

He could break down rd1 in 2016 and be worth nothing. $1.8m is a pretty good motivator and safety net.

Then again, because of all the hype, this could be the biggest contract Chanel & Pat receive in their career. They are both up to first-grade without a doubt, but they're probably never going to be superstars. You have to remember Chanel played in a very good team at the end of the year, once the hype dies down, I feel they will just be recognized as dime a dozen players as someone else said. You wouldn't have said that 5 years ago, but these days every centre/winger that comes through the grades are all very good/capable so they are no better than many other players. Sione is the one who looks like he will develop into a very good player, thrown in at fullback in 2016, I can't wait to see how has developed after say 50 games.

If Pat gets anymore then a basic first grade deal it's BS, Channel not much more too being we have wingers comming out of our arse.

We need to offload Uate and Boyd. Wouldn't worry me if we offloaded Gagai either his defence if pretty ordinary and I can see him headin back to the broncos for his next contract. Surely we would have a bit in the bank considering the amount of players that have gone in the passed few years compared to what we signed. If we lose these 3 Matt Gidleys head is gunna be on the block!

I'd rather pay overs for all of them if in years down the track Sione lives up to the hype then roll over and let them go to the Bulldogs. We've got the cap space and there isn't anyone on the market I would throw that money at. The club needs to take a ****ing risk. The last thing I want to see happen is go back to being a club that sees any promising junior that comes through the system let go and we're left with a roster full of unwanted garbage from other clubs.

Really, what does the club lose by offering big money to Chanel and Pat in the hope of retaining Sione? A bit of cap space? We've had at least a million bucks locked up by players who don't deserve it for the last few years. At least these boys have promise.

Pat and Chanel are both very good prospects.
Chanel was our leading try scorer in NYC two years in a row and for his first year of NSW cup - and he scored 17 tries in both grades despite missing some games this year too. He also played for NSW under 20s and residents. He has literally scored 100 tries in the last 5 years - more than any other junior we have had except Uate maybe.
Pat has played for NSW and Australia in several age groups including for Aus schoolboys and was our 18th man a couple of times this year. He was also one of the most important players in our under 18s national title winners in 2011.
Sione is a one in 10 years type of prospect, but the other two are also as good prospects as we ever get really - as good as Sims or Rochow or Clydsdale etc.

If we throw big money at Sione, leaving Chanel and Pat out of it. Does he play first grade or simply play U20s or NSW Cup? Would he be ready for a full season of first grade considering he hardly had a full season of U20s.

If we throw massive $'s at the boys, well some of our established fav's will be in the reggies.

Lets face it Dane and BJL are safe, I reckon Jimmy is safe being a current SOO rep. But realistically Uate will be in the NSW cup, and hopefully boyd moves on opening the space for Sione automatically at first grade.

Still shocked Mamo was shunted so quickly to me at this stage his much better then Chanelle.
