Dane Gagai Re-Signs with Knights until 2017

It was always going to happen, it will make it easier for us to keep our home grown talent.

Stuff like this and the fact that the Dogs had gotten the Mata'utias to sign letters of intent before we even started negotiating with them prove why I have such little faith in our management. If the club want to keep Gagai then why on earth are they only just about to enter negotiations now when he's been talking to the Broncos for months? In fact I bet the club hadn't even thought about extending his contract yet until that article came out.

It really wouldn't surprise me if the Mata'utias, Gagai and Mamo all go at the end of the year and we're left with an ageing McManus, an out of form Uate, and BJ who I keep thinking will leave the second he's given an opportunity to play and live in Sydney.

Getting Lamb and Cogger to extend must have been a fluke because everything else is pointing to us being incredibly incompetent.

Was about to say the same thing RE Gagai

His first season he was consistent. His defense was comprehensive and trustworthy, and every season since then we've had to cop some pretty pathetic defense

Imo it's just effort. Gagai is naturally leaner guy who probably doesn't like the contact. So if he doesn't have to put his body on the line to save his career, he won't. Point is, his defense will never improve
 
Let him go Give Sione his spot we would be better off .... Also if Uate does,nt blitz it this year sack him too .
He has,nt earnt his $500,000 cheque yet he played great up until his big pay day, from then on we got half his talent (a 1/2 a million dollar not performing to his best winger what a joke ).
 
It's a must that we keep either Dane or Sione.

I'd be happy with either.

Based on last season you could easily argue he was 4th choice winger.
 
I thought he was fine last year ... he was down on form in general while Bennett was here, but that would apply to most of the team, not just Uate.

He'd be my first winger picked based on last year. Don't forget he was also fighting a bung knee.
 
Too much Money for what we get from him , theres guys here that would do the same job as he has done for the last 2 years and they would do it for 1/4 of what he is getting imo.
Also he has never improved under the high ball ..... Or put him to centre and put someone outside him who can catch.
 
Ppl have a short memory sometimes. Uate isn't interchangeable or comparable to any player in our squad. He's the best finisher in the world and has been for the time he has been In FG.

His problem is that he can be a pea heart and it shows in his general concentration and decision making in defense - again if he was playing for a contract I can guarantee with my life that he wouldn't be under fire for his pay packet
 
A couple of years ago he was the best but not for 2 years now but we are still paying him to be the best .

I agree with most of that. I don't think he's a pea heart though. He's just a confidence player who drops his bundle too much when he makes a mistake. When confidence is up, there's not too many better though. :)

Bennett didn't help him either by changing his role and the way he plays.
 
Happy Aku is the best winger in the world. Sad Aku is still very good, but not $500k good.

I think we'll see happy aku this season.

I have Mullen in the same boat. He doesn't look so bad but he vanishes when down on confidence. Has been getting better though i think. Maybe Uate will improve mentally with age.
 
People forget how much we missed vuna when he left and aku is the same, the work rate of helping our forwards, he does it as good as manu and the other big wingers in the comp if not better. just because the tries aren't in the 20's doesnt mean he isnt contributing in other ways, and with a bung knee
 
Uate got 12 tries in 15 games in 2014.
He always scores at just under a try a game.
He was hobbling around on one leg and was sitting on the sidelines when the team finally found some form at the end of the year, but he still kept his try scoring percentage up there with Tahu and miles ahead of any other player we've had who has played a significant number of games.
Any player in the league would take 12 tries from 15 games as a good year.

THE Broncos are ready to play their final ace to lure outstanding centre Dane Gagai home — his younger brother Jacob.

Jacob, 19, has signed with the Broncos because he was homesick in Newcastle and he could be the clincher to Dane becoming Justin Hodges’ successor at centre.

Jacob is a highly talented playmaker and outside back who the Knights wanted to keep and he could become a star in his own right at the Broncos after moving to Brisbane.

With Jacob and his mentor Wayne Bennett at Brisbane, it will be difficult for Dane to knock back an offer from Red Hill which is sure to come.

Gagai has already spoken to Bennett about becoming a Bronco again.

However, there is a hitch in Brisbane’s plans to reunite Dane and Bennett.

It is expected the money being offered at Newcastle will be superior to the salary offered by Brisbane who already have marquee stars in Anthony Milford, Darius Boyd, Ben Hunt, Corey Parker and Justin Hodges.

Gagai found success at Newcastle under Bennett after he was sacked by Brisbane for a series of indiscretions.

He is set to debut for the Maroons in Origin this year and a deal is unlikely to be done until the Origin period.

Dane was coy about his future, describing the situation as delicate.

“I have obviously thought about things and thought about what I will do but for now I will just keep it to myself,” he said.

Dane said his younger brother needed to be closer to his Mackay home and was already loving being part of the Broncos club.

“He just wanted to be close to family,” Gagai said.

“He’s really enjoying it up there. I am looking forward to seeing him chuck on the Broncos jersey and doing well in the under-20s.

“Wayne (Bennett) did help Jacob get back there but he felt he had to get out of my shadow.

“He wasn’t even in my shadow but he felt he had to make his own path.’’

With Brent Tate retired and Boyd set to miss at least the first two Origin games, Gagai is battling Dale Copley and Will Chambers for one of two Queensland wing spots.

The opening two months of the season will be critical to his hopes.

Gagai returned to the Maroons Emerging Origin camp this year after he was disciplined for skipping part of the camp last year.

“The Queensland position is in my sights but that’s further on this year and I need to take each game at a time,’’ Gagai said.

If QLD select Gagai, not only will the blues win again, but his price will probably decrease; he'll be revealed as a player with serious deficiency in key areas

There is a lot of ridiculous stuff written in that article. I highly doubt any offer Newcastle offer Dane will blow Brisbane's out of the water. For starters we don't have the third party money they do and we already have a lot of our salary cap wrapped up in outside backs (and a lot more if we manage to re-sign the Mata'utias). One interesting thing about the article though was that Jacob chose to leave. I was under the impression he was forced out for Lamb/Cogger.

To me it's fairly obvious Gagai has already made his decision to go back to Brisbane (I.e. Bennett) but he's being careful about the way he's talking about it given he's still a Knight for another season.
