Small update from the SMH:

LAURIE SHEDS LOAD

SPEAKING of cult figures, former Tigers and Panthers bad boy Daine Laurie - who could be mistaken for Jamal Idris's twin - has been shedding the kilos too.

Sacked by Phil Gould after drinking on a plane to New Zealand to calm his fear of flying, Laurie's promising yet controversial career was considered over. But having been cast a lifeline by new Knights coach Wayne Bennett, who tried to lure the explosive prop to the Dragons in 2010, Laurie has dropped close to 10kg and refrained from returning home to the NSW far north coast, where bad influences have led him astray and jeopardised his career.

The towering 27-year-old has also fully recovered from knee surgery that plagued his final season at the Panthers. He is determined to stay out of trouble and turn his career around.

And fellow Knights recruit Danny Buderus appears the player of old. The 34-year-old has looked effortless at training and as fit as ever. The former Blues and Kangaroos star is injury free, and has participated fully in every training session since they resumed on January 2.

The news isn't so good for boom rookie Ryan Stig, however, with the explosive half forced to undergo knee surgery within months of having surgery on his groin. He's expected to miss at least the first month of the NRL season.

Bad luck for Stig! :(

Other then stigs news that is the best article I have seen this year
Such a laurie fan!!! and who doesnt love bedsy

Great news about Buderus indeed. Just what you want to read about your senior players (and quite rare!).

So great to hear about both Laurie & Bedsy! I knew Bedsy still had it in him, I just can't wait to see him back on the field for us. Sucks about Stig though, he should have a speedy recovery.

In some ways Stig's injury does gives Roberts his time to shine. So it's not all bad.

Get well soon Stig!

Well it doesnt really benifit roberts really because our halves are mullo and gids anyway, i guess maybe roberts can stake his claim for stigs possible spot on the bench

Stig replied to us on twitter and said he will hopefully be back earlier than the article says. :)

Grat news about Laurie, cant wait too see him play in the red and blue and see a tall hairy wrecking ball running around! Also great news on Bedsy as well. Hopefully his back to him old playing self or atleast close to it, and returns to being one of the best hookers in the NRL. Hopefully! As much as i'd love to see Bedsy wearing the Sky nlue jumper again ahead of the likes of Farah and Ennis, i would much rather him concentrate on the Knights. Too bad about Stig but, but as Joel said, we still have Robert, if we're struck with an injurie (knock on wood, it wont happen) we'll have Robert to fill in. HURRY UP 2012 SEASON!!

Who will make up our bench? If Laurie is included who misses out? 14. Hilder/Wes 15. Faaoso 16. Edwards 17. Laurie/Cuthbertson. So do we leave out Hilder, Cuthbertson or Wes??

Bennett told Wes the centre spot was his to lose so he should be starting not on the bench .

Well maybe he has already lost it? Bennett did say that before he had signed Tahu.. And trust me there is no way in hell that Tahu won't be a starting center, so its either Sau or Wes for the other spot.. Sau playing NSW cup, I doubt it. Wes has been mediocre for a very long time, he has one good season and people think he will keep a kiwi international out of the team

Why should Tahu be a certain starter he's done very little since 2007.
If Wes is impressing at training he should be the 1st centre picked.

That's not true Mc. Wes resigned with us after we had signed Tahu. Otherwise why would Naiqama even need that assurance? It would be completely obvious after that year that he'd be in the centres.

On all of last year's form (beats me how you can overlook an entire season) Wes will be first picked, and Sau is on shakey ground. Sau's been quiet for a few years now. He's lost his test spot. Naiqama is still captain of Fiji, if you're going by rep honours.

I thought Sau was selected for the recent test matches but chose not to attend to get a proper and full off-season in? Im sure it was mentioned in a Sau-related article posted on the forum.

He was dropped for the ANZAC test, and was given the chance of touring for the Four Nations, but that was only after several had withdrawn from injury (because there was an article when the squad was first announced saying he wanted to win his spot back).

And tahu was also on the bench at panthers so i doubt he would have that big of a problem with it

By sounds of things tahu has been training the house down and is looking fitter then ever, I think him and Wes might get the first crack in centres.

Captain of Fiji is like being the manager at McDonalds, yeah your the manager but... And cmon, Wes was impressive at times throughout the year and definitely deserved to be resigned but let's be serious, he was most improved not best and fairest. Tahu may have been quiet the last couple years but imo he hasn't had the right environment, coach or motivation to play to his potential. Let's not forget Tahu is a dual international and currently holds the knights all time try scoring record. Wes over Tahu, please

I beg your pardon!?

But i gotta agree with James, going on last years form with Wes, how can he not be your first choice centre!? Its definetly going to be out of Sau and Tahu, and i think Tahu might be in the lead...
