Biggest disappointments (players)

I was too young to remember anything about Dan Tolar except most people thinking he was a very average player. Was there a point in time where he was highly regarded? lol
He was very solid until 2009 when he fractured his kneecap in round one, and ended up missing the entire season. He struggled after that and eventually retired after ongoing issues with that and his achilles.

Not sure if he's been mentioned, but i;d throw Milton Thaiday in there. Kid exploded, thought we had the second coming of Preston Campball. Don't even know what happened in the end.

I cant remember exactly where but they plucked him out of obscurity in some QLD competition but the grind of first grade and the shock to the system was probably too much to bear, being an extremely late bloomer for a fullback. The injury didn't help but he was more one of those guys that would have been handy to be a backup for a guy like Gidley back then, and funnily enough they needed a fullback after Mark Hughes coudn't play and they didnt want to keep Robbie around.
Though in hindsight I wonder if they would have reconsidered Robbie if they knew how broken Mark Hughe's body was.

In no order;
- beau henry
- Kyle odonnell
- con mika
- Ethan cooke
- Josh ailomi (sorry for incorrect spelling)
- Peter & sione
- Jake mamo
- Jarrod Mullen (don’t blame him for a second, if he was in a good system with a good 7 - he could have been anything. He simply was not a 7)
- Corey patterson
- Kade snowden
- Callan Richardson
- Luke walsh
- brock lamb
- Jack cogger
- Seu seu
- Danny levi
- Kirk Reynoldson
- likiliki (centre) - can someone fill me in on why he was only given 1 game in FG before we gave up on him? I thought he showed quite a lot of talent
- Tex Hoy
- Hodkinson
- Joe wardle
- costigan
- aiden guerra lol all the articles about him in the pre-season suggested he was going to have the impact of Stephen Crichton or Cooper Cronk lol

Pleasant surprises
- Friz - after guerra, I was worried he’d also be **** but he’s been nothing short of an awesome signing
- Vuna
- Sau
- Carney
- Marzhew
- Taia
- Hilder
- 2nd coming of Doogs
- Faaso
- Barney
- Taufua
- McKinnon (I thought he’d be good, but far out was he quickly turning into an absolute star. His physicality leading to opposition errors in big moments at such an early point in his career reeked of future SOO player - still heartbroken for him)
- Mase, he was great for us

I personally liked Guerra. May have been a touch of an overpay but for a side that was losing too much I think he was the perfect addition in the forwards for when he was there. He was never going to be there in the long run but helped made a wooden spoon contender into a team pushing for finals.

Never really liked the Mason signing personally barring a handful excellent games for us at minimum wage at the backend of 2012 but thought it was just Bennett justifying his signing by continuing to play him after that.

I'm sure Chris Bailey has been mentioned, I know he had some freakishly good games for us but seemed way to inconsistent and the club had no interest in keeping him which surprised many, including team mates?

Thaiday had played quite a bit of Super Rugby for NSW, so wouldn't say he was exactly coming from obscurity.

Agree Mason was a waste of time and his brother being introduced to Mullen lead him down his very dark path, unfortunately.

Milton was a victim of smiths clean out. We should’ve kept him

Well he was great to start 2006, then got injured and didn’t play much again until the end of 2007 when he left. In the 2006 finals Kurt Gidley was given a shot at fullback when Seagram did his ACL and completely tore it up and made the position his own. So as great as he was starting 2006, I wasn’t upset that he departed. There wasn’t a spot for him anymore. It was apparently so he could take a fulltime job and he was happy to retire.

Luke Walsh is a harsh call.
The little guy made the most of his small frame and had a great career, or rather, is having a great career. I see he has signed for Macquarie for next year.
I'm worried about Pezet being only 80kg and Walsh had to be constantly eating junk food and wear full gear at weigh in to crack 70kg.
I ummed and ahhed a bit about putting walshy on the list. I think he was disappointing for us given his capability, but had a great run at penrith (i can't speak to what he was like afterwards as i didn't seem him after leaving penrith)

I'll add Slade Griffin in a similar way to that Billy. Possibly the best tackling technique I've ever seen on a Knight's player. He was some sort of player, but that knee injury was as bad as it gets.

Debuted for NZ after a stellar season with us and than his knee buckled again and poor bugger never recovered :(

God so many garbage guys for us. The centre from Cronulla who was killing it, came to us and was trash and went back and is killing it again. Too lazy to look him up.

Tolar back then was being talked about for origin
That's interesting, i

know both brothers and Les is 10x the loser Willie is. Les used to call himself a boxer - neither brother could fight their way out of a paper bag. Gal bashed Lucas Browne, Mark Hunt and every football player who had stints in boxing and Gal openly says that he isn’t a boxer and to call himself such is a disrespect to the sport. Gal would KO both brothers on the same night.
Sorry for the tangent, but I’m not a fan of the Masons lol

I have fond memories of Jesse Royal especially towards the backend of his time with us. Had 0 expectations and I thought he did some good things.

AK47, how could I neglect putting him on the disappointment list. Dude was given a restricted weight training program because of his freak genetics. I seem to remember him breaking a bench press record at Melb having barely touched a bench press until that day

Yeah Jess Royal was really good for a player who no doubt wasn’t on a huge contract. We seemed to get a few props along those lines in those days … Mark Taufua and Richie Fa’aoso also similar.
