Adam O'Brien discussion

He didn’t need to bring Daniel and Elliott off until pretty late, they hadn’t made many tackles because of how much more possession we had, how easily we were getting downfield, and how stop start the game was due to the ref being an attention seeker who thinks it’s all about him. There was nothing wrong with the rotations tbh.

I'd of given hetho more time. D SAF just didn't look like he wanted to do much.

I think the Jason Ryles turning down the Dragons to be an assistant at the Storm situation should be a bit of a wake up call for us if we ever sack AOB.

I don't think any super-coaches will be lining up to take over for us.

One thing I thought going into the Cowboys game was at least if we lose, he can’t blame the Thursday to Saturday turnaround in the press conference.

But he did. 😔

Said it was a tough week long turnaround. It was nine days … NINE DAYS!!! It’s pretty much the longest turnaround you could ever hope for!

I must’ve missed him saying that jeez. The rest of it was a bit of a mess too.
I got what he was trying to say about last year being built of gritty losses but I don’t think Saturdays game was actually anything like some of those losses. It was close yes but it was a game where they had more ball, made less tackles and ultimately let slip because they repeatedly kept shooting themselves in the foot. Really not sure what he was watching in the second half.

It's only round two, and we could have easily beaten the Cows and been hyperbolic about great we look. Don't panic!

If we snuck home against the cows and won the game, I certainly would not be hyperbolic about how great we look.

We had enough chances to win the game twice. Then second half all we had to do was come out, show a bit of backbone and put the game to bed, then made it to extra time and virtually no desire shown to win the game at all.

But that match was important to keep the win column ticking over, unfortunate that the players didn't lift accordingly.

And OB is always quick with the excuses, short turn around, long turnaround, gave them some time off, worked them pretty hard, we just learned X Y or Z lesson on what it takes to win early season, late season, in the finals etc etc.

Do you honestly think he says these things to the players?

Meanwhile Wayne Bennett rarely sticks the boot into his players and usually takes the approach of trying to say or do something to protect them and bring the attention on himself if things are not going right. Last I checked, he’s had a pretty good career in this coaching lark. Every coach has to find the method which works for them.

AOB declined to stick the boot in to the players after the Eels game last year, which a lot of us were unhappy with, and you’d have to say the response from the players after that was pretty good.

Just a quick point on AOB 2024 - What we have now is a coach that has options to hold players to account and wield the axe or shuffle combos to get the best out of the whole squad, something that was much more limited as a means of lifting performance from the playing group in previous seasons.

What I would also acknowledge is the fact that he seems to manage the process effectively - I think he has been measured and methodical about his handling/testing of the halves pairing combos, to suss out the best balance to suit the team, capability, playing style, etc. to date, particularly with the Hastings calls.

He seems to be an effective man-manager and has had the playing group all pulling in the same direction for some time now....let's hope his strategic and tactical skills in producing good game plans and getting the team balance right, gets us some consistency in the coming weeks to really start building a decent campaign for this year that sees us being a solid top 8 side that is genuinely in the mix at the business end of the season.

He's mentioned before in previous years that he's felt he hasn't had any options with our NSW Cup team and squad depth being so poor.

I also liked the quick replacement of Jenkins, even if it was only one more match until Marzhew is back, Gagai on the wing and Lucas at centre is clearly a better option. Then it was scuppered by KPP's injury of course, but I feel like he would have just let things drift and kept Jenkins in there in previous seasons.

Feeling more optimistic about this week than most on here. I agree AOB has made sensible decisions this year, not sure i would have done anything differently. Our problem has been our pack has been playing terribly most of the time, crossland’s form is no where near last year and as a result our halves have struggled to capture any form.
Brailey being fit will make a big difference in a few weeks. Marzhew has been a massive loss also. So happy to see AOB make that changes immediately. Hopefully the next move is getting the best performing prop in for d-saf

It's a lot simpler.
Hastings had literally weeks of pre-season at full training and wasn't ready.
He had 18 runs for 119 metres in reserves this week - the most runs by 7 and the second most metres in the team.
They probably told him to work hard for 80 minutes and he's back in - so he did.

Have a watch of his interview today on Knights site. Reporters hit hard about swapping halves. His answer was very forthright. Very in control. Lets hope it pays off, but I haven't had an issue with him this yr. Team has been close again in some games against very good opposition. Would rather see Dsaf's form pick up, but I would imagine he's on notice.
