Havent seen a lot that fills me with confidence - very conservative . This is a big year for AOB , he has all the off field resources, the facilities and support needed to be successful.

I'm intrigued to know his influence on the playing roster, Some weird **** has gone down in that area. Shibasaki on a multi year deal called for an internal investigation.

Didn't he say somewhere that he has very little to do with signings,

I would say he has little to do with the intricacies of the contracts I.e. the length of the deal probably isn't on him. But surely he has a big say in who the club signs.

What I take from all the articles on him is that he learnt from Bellamy and Robertson that his job is about getting the skills and attributes of the top squad players as good as possible.
He seems to know almost nothing about anything at the club outside that "bubble" - but can probably tell you everything about his top squad players from what they eat for breakfast to whether can step better off the left or right foot.
The players he prefers are guys who are outstanding athletes over guys who have big hearts and are footy players.
I believe he has improved most of our players by having them work on their shortcomings - as individuals they defend better, are fitter, have improved their skills etc, but as a team, the structures haven't improved much, and the gameplans have been awful. My hope is that Joey is the answer to better attacking structures and better gameplans.

There was a discussion on Vossys show on SEN with Matthew Johns and Vossy mentioned how quiet Ponga was in the trials. Matt said he was talking to Joey about that same thing and Joey said they were mainly using last years structures and that they were saving all the new shapes for the season proper. Not giving anything away.
That was clear when when Clifford said in an interview that he'd been training on the left and then played on the right.

I think everything they have worked on will come out in the first few games.

Also I’m a bit confused by this “last year’s structures” statement. Last year our “structure” was very heavily dictated by following whatever Pearce wanted us to do at the time. He played on-ball on both sides of the ruck like Cleary & DCE, but a ****ty version.

The style we were playing with in the trials, of splitting the field between our halves and using a ball playing 13 to link play going downfield, that’s a very different, decentralised decision-making structure. The only thing which was the same is that KP’s role still seems to be to roam around and call for the ball when he sees something brewing, including getting inside his half and over calling him when appropriate.

Maybe we ran a lot of the same shapes as last year? But lots of teams run similar shapes, the difference is speed of execution.

Is there a link to this interview somewhere?

I actually noticed KP take some initiative with kicks against the Bulldogs. Ended up almost gifting Dom a few tries with his grubbers. Haven’t really seen a great deal of that over the last 4 years. Hopefully he can take some pressure off Clune and Clifford in that department.

I think (hope) attacking wise we see our centres getting clean early ball without kp playing 5/8.(joey used to bang on about it every time we had a channel 9 game). ponga to play off kurt mann. a 6 7 and 13 ball playing and ponga supporting mainly through the middle is the way we should be playing.

Reckon that's just them saving face for Ponga being quiet in the trials (which IMO isn't really a concern). As mentioned above the attack looked drastically different and far more adventurous than last season even without Ponga getting involved.

If the coach really instructed them not to use trial matches to put in action the changes they've made during the pre-season then that is idiotic and concerning.

One thing Ponga was doing a lot was getting right behind the dummy half (Randall) and talking to him.
He used to do that a lot with Levi.
With Levi, they had a few plays that involved Levi going for a scoot and offloading to Ponga who was right in his pocket when he hit the line. It led to a few tries.
I didn't really see what the plan was with him behind Randall, but he was talking a lot. Maybe it was a captain thing.
