2026 Recruitment And Retention

So my original thought that Jonah wouldn't come back ended up being a reality back during the season despite actually thinking we were a chance after the offer we gave him a few weeks back.

Obviously would have been happy to see him back in our colours but not happening now.

Interested to see who Peter goes for next.

Well I was always worried Jonah had been training fulltime since he was a 16 year old kid and he's never put on any real size.
Still 80kg and skinny.
He might be playing for Australia in a few years, or he might never be big enough to hold his own at the top level.

“Enjoy reserves” isn’t much of a burn when he’s literally choosing reserves and less money over being the starting halfback here. There’s a clear loser in this situation and it’s not Pezet. Guess he hasn’t heard about the great culture that’s being built here.
Yeah it’s pretty embarrassing really. Can’t even convince a former junior to sign on big money and starting halfback.

Although, do you want a halfback that doesn’t have the balls to back himself and only wants to play under perfect conditions.

Be interesting to see what happens if Hughes re-signs or he gets injured again.

From what I saw, Wishart absolutely killed it as a halfback the couple times I saw him play this year. I understand he’s not versatile, but there’s no guarantee he’s even next halfback if Hughes were to leave
He's not. Wishart is first drop for either 6 or 7.

Pezet clearly doesn't think he's good enough to thrive in Newcastle. Thats what I take from his decision.

His ultimatum goes like this: I'll play in reserves until Hughes re-signs, then continue to play in reserves or go looking for another club who can't offer me what Newcastle was offering.

What a cuck. Bro doesn't realise in a couple seasons time he'll be 24 with next to no experience after Hughes re-signs on October 31st 2026.

No doubt Pezet thinks he'll be playing elsewhere on loan in 2025. And he may well get a gig somewhere but it won't be a walk up start with your own game strategy built for you. Will be an even greater challenge to succeed. What an young fool. His advisors need their heads checked. He just left $2.5m on the table

I do find it a really weird decision. I wonder if he'll end up looking back in years to come and thinking "what if?" ...

Does show how difficult it is to recruit in 2024 though.

The fact he’s knocked us back but then signed a deal
To do basically the same thing on a few months time is crazy, basically more crazy that he just showed his cards that he doesn’t believe he’s ready to run a team right now. Doubt many will knock at his door.

I can’t see Hughes not re-signing with Storm. He would be a priority over Munster honestly.

We're definitely short a 7, but I didn't mind Phoenix at 7 at the back end of last year...

1. Ponga
6. Gamble
7. Crossland
9. Brailey

Pryce is a dark horse that could force his way into the side too.

I'd like to ask him why he is so keen to avoid FG. Because that's what he has achieved with this decision.

Wishart infront of him at 6, 7 and 14.

Let's say he gets a loan deal, there's no other obvious candidate with as vacant a 7 spot. Maybe the Dragons? And even then, what has he achieved by that?

The only rational explanations are:

1) he doesn't believe he is capable of the task yet

2) He actually thinks he'll find a way into the halves at the Storm

3) He didn't want to come to Newy and is waiting another year to get a better offer from some other team

I mean he needs to play to get a better offer. Even if he does play well in reserve grade, our offer of 650k a season is overs as is.

Watson and Dom weren't our juniors

And? Who cares where players come from if they're good.

The knights can't sign rep players so when they develop some it's a big issue if they want to up and leave at the first opportunity.

Watsons last season for us was 2021, not 4 or 5 years ago.

Lol. a) he wasn't playing halfback cogger was and b) having a 5/8 being asked to do nothing but tackle isn't a recipe for success.

One more rational explanation, nothing has actually changed. He is in Melbourne next year no matter what. There is a chance Hughes moves north, in which case he stays at one of the Gold standard franchises in the league, otherwise Hughes resigns and his contract is void. I always thought this is how it would play out, unless melbourne held firm on the get outs. He wasn't playing somewhere else next year anyway.

They all went to “contenders”. It’s always been the case, good players want to go to the best teams. Funny thing is Roosters aren’t contending for anything unfortunately. We just have to keep chipping away and become contenders.

Also if Best remains on the field he is easily worth 750k imo.
