2026 Recruitment And Retention

If you produce a superstar in any position the only reason the Roosters wouldn't immediately attempt to poach that player is if they have someone as good or better in that position.

The Roosters are shameless cowards, as are the NRL for permitting this charade

NRL are certainly cowards, or more accurately, complicit, by allowing it all to continue on.

Until the NRL makes players accountable for salary cap rorts, and this forces players to think what could happen to them if they are caught cheating the cap. Players know whats going on, they might not know what other players are getting or if the club is over cap etc, but they sure as **** know when they sign 2 contracts, or when they agree to a figure and turn up to sign and suddenly the cap component is one amount, and a 3rd party makes up the rest of their negotiated amount. This is illegal in the salary cap.

Current origin player Reece Robson becomes available and no one bats an eyelid any more when he signs with the Roosters to replace a kiwi representative and premiership winner in Brandon Smith who becomes another failure of the Robinson regime. I hate them soooooo much.

And that's the thing. You spend years trying to develop a half, one comes on the scene and the Roosters, Melbourne or a Sydney club poaches them.

NRL has to do something to fix this stuff, cap concessions for juniors, he'll at this point I'd even support a draft.

The problem though, is the NRL cares about revenue and fanbase, that's it. How fair the competition is, is irrelevant. Salary cap is a joke. No interest on properly enforcing it.
As an example of how one sided the salary cap is, last week Ben Hunt signed with the Broncos for $550-$600k, where this year he was being paid close to $1million per season.
Yesterday we heard that the NRL had approved the contract, even though it was $400k plus less than he earned in 2024.
Can you imagine that amount of lee way given to the Knights?
The salary cap is a joke and the NRL are morally and ethically bankrupt!
It depends which club you are as to whether you get a “wink, wink” from the NRL.

Unfortunately Sutton unlikely to get much of a run in halves with us still with Hastings, Cogger, Likely playing 1sts and Cup especially if Hastings is picked at 7 in 1sts means Cogger would likely be in Cup.
Best outcome is Cogger in 1sts with Hastings at Lock in Cup meaning we could play Sutton 7 in Cup giving him a chance to further develop.
Hopefully Crosslands is selected to play 9 or 14 depending on Brailey being fit and playing well
Also depends on the coach of the NSW cup team as well,

Yeah and Hunt’s package includes a job after he retires, to make up the difference in salary.

The Tigers got in trouble for trying to do this exact thing with Robbie Farah. Fine when one of the big clubs does it though I guess.

All that said, players wanting to go to or stay at a successful club is clearly a huge part of it too. Just look at Pezet to see how they'll prefer that for less money and opportunity.

And I get this aspect, but while the NRL let this stuff continue, those same clubs will be the successful clubs and the rest get the scraps.

Before Hunt signed anything, the NRL came out and said how his value was going to be enforced. Yet Brisbane come in and make a mockery of that stance and the NRL ratify it. Not to mention if the job after he retires is true the NRL again set rules for one club, and not others.

They enforce rules against weaker clubs and let the stronger clubs get away with murder as they are scared of them.

The NRL sign off on all contracts, including TPA's. It is a known fact that clubs arrange TPA's for players in lieu of payment and get players to sign for a certain amount on the cap and the rest in TPA. Players have come out and said this so it is not refutable. Yet at contract renewal time, a club presents the contract from them to the NRL along with the TPA at the same time or shortly after and the NRL does not bat an eyelid at this? Come on. It's a complete rort and the NRL just lets it happen.

I swear one day I'm just going to walk away from the NRL forever, not that it will matter. Revenue and viewership is all they care about.

The club should be looking at how Ricky Stuart does things. He is very clever at finding players who are either not wanted or having second thoughts about their futures at another club. Ethan Strange he recruited knowing the Roosters had Smith, Keary and Walker ahead of him.

I'm hearing you , but you know we'll never walk . Suckers that we are 😂

So is Leo gone? I truly hope so. His attitude is completely out of proportion to his achievements. I would play him and his brother in NSW Cup, He knew we moved D Saf to free up money to keep him.

Be nice to know what the exact offer is. I guess we know between 800/900k . 900 is crazy for Leo. At Canberra I say Papali retiring 2026 perhaps? Leo is his replacement.

Could consider a swap for Fogarty for next year? We would be short a forward though and would Canberra be willing to do that swap. I doubt it.

Oh well, take the money while you can cause it’s a short career, but also good riddance.

Loyalty in rugby league died a long time ago. It just grinds my gears because we were the ones that turned him into a first grader/representative player in the first place. If we never signed him he probably would’ve been on the tools while playing for the Mounties part time.
