2025 Recruitment And Retention

I've heard him talk about when they signed him, they made a show of how Uncle Nick is always available for a phone call & advice (they demonstrated this by having the old boys who were taking Cheese for a round of golf at one of the fancy clubs up there they get free access to call Nick on his mobile for a yarn, totally not planned/rehearsed at all).

Steve Jobs level of flim flam and nonsense.

Sounds more like - if you're "in", you get the royal treatment; if you're "out" you get the silent treatment.

Yeah Sandon Smith being "shopped" is apparently his agent pushing it, with permission. He's not happy - he's been arguably their best and most consistent player this year besides Naf Whyte, and his game looks like a natural fit besides Sam Walker, yet they're pretty openly saying "you will never get a real shot at it while you're here."

I reckon someone will want him.

Some might say this is proof of how great the Roosters are as a club - even though he's going well, they look at him and say, nope this guy isn't rep calibre, he's simply not "sexy" enough to be a Roosters player - but I reckon it's actually a sign they've lost their way a bit. They've wholeheartedly embraced being the Real Madrid of this league. But when they were winning comps, they had heaps of guys who were just really honest hard workers. I reckon they never would have looked at someone like Reece Robson if he didn't get that Blues jersey...
Very true, how long would Mitch Aubusson last there at the moment?

As if an NRL club works this way. Rosters change at the blink of an eye, say Manu became an option would we than not go for him because Schiller was promised centre.

I am sure players get told what position there seen as, aside from elite players, no one would be promised or insinuated to have a position.

thats what you sell as the club though right? Instead of nah mate your yesturdays news get back to cup and we will call you up when we need you.
Players are "promised or insinuated" positions all the time to get them to the club, wasnt that part of the roosters pitch to dom?

It'd be disheartening for Schiller given he would have been anticipating this would be his breakout year. Will be nice to have talented first-grade depth sitting in NSW Cup for the first time in many years.

Hopefully the pathway to a first-grade spot with Gags nearing retirement is enough to keep him interested in staying at the club long-term.
That's why I think it could be a possibility that he retires this year.

How would that work though? Mutual option. He has to agree? Do we still need to pay him for next season if we do part ways? I don’t see him retiring at the of the year.

Apologies if its been mentioned, Sandon Smith knocked back $400k from the Roosters, do we have $600k to spare for him?

We’re probably already paying Fletcher $500Kish, so you add Sandon and all of a sudden it’s, essentially, $3.8 million on three players, because all four can’t start at once…

Ponga, Sharpe, Brown and Crossland will be the spine next year. They couldn’t have made it more clear at this point.

The only wildcard is Arthur for mine. It was only the other week Brailey was preferred at hooker and he's not been setting the world on fire either.
I agree, i love Crossy but his best position is 14, or starting only to take the heat from the other pack. He lacks creation and genuine threat as a 9. He potentially could be a great 13 also but would need to start poking his nose through the line more.

He does throw a really really nice long pass out of 9 does Phoenix though. One of the better ones. That pass, often behind two lead runners to hit a half 20 metres away, was a huge element of our attack really humming in 2023. The field was always so open.

I reckon the % of the time Phoenix clearly goes the wrong way is below a lot of other 9’s, so many of them get tunnel vision.

I don’t know I’m reluctant to discount the idea that Phoenix can be a key part of a lethal attack. I’ve seen it. And then defensively he’d have to be one of the best hookers going.

Also don’t think we should discount Gamble playing 14 and coming on to do a stint as a ball playing middle will be better for the balance of the team than two hookers.

Ryan Matterson on the outer at parra. Always rated him but seems to be on the decline. Could he make for a good prop? Certainly has the size and could do worse?

He has had a lot of concussions, so is a concussion risk

Also, there has to be a reason he isn’t playing first grade currently for Parra. On form he should be a starter for them, so not sure what’s going on there

Big Money Matto AKA Ryan Catterson is one of the last players I’d like to see in a Knights jersey.

Downhill skier, selfish, soft.

That’s why he’s not in first grade.
People remember him from his peak in '22, but like many Eels players he's never recovered from the grand final loss. A shell of a player. He'll probably end up un Super League
