2023 Recruitment & Retention Thread

I think for squad balance I’d target a hooker (Jayden Berrell, Sharks/Jets) and bin one of Marzhew and Asi. But yeah otherwise that’s a good list. Getting rid of Johns, Jones or Mann, or more than one of those three, in order to promote Talty and/or target a bit of a higher quality bench/depth forward like Keenan Palasia would also be good.

So we have 6 positions to fill.
And I expect us to get both KPP and Pryce early so we have 4 to sign…
Signed.
Will Pryce, HLF/FLB
Kai Pearce-Paul, SR/CTR
Targets.
Jackson Hastings, HLF
Greg Marzhew, W
Eliese Katoa, SR
Daejarn Asi, HLF/CTR/FLB
Like the looks of the targets list, feel as though hastings will end up being brooks instead and instead of asi id target Harris Tavita... even though he's "retiring", he's still young with plenty of footy left and is one of the better utilities in the comp

Why would we target a bloke who has said himself he’s not playing next year or the foreseeable future as he’s going to take up other passions?

Per the Q&A of the last Toohey’s pod, he’s adamant the club is still keen on Brooks and that Hastings isn’t being talked about.

In a sense, it’s the more ambitious move. You know exactly what you’ll get with Hastings and him at his best probably isn’t as ceiling raising as Brooks at his best.

But the last time we saw “Brooks at his best” was, what, 2018? It was silly he won Dally M Halfback of the Year over some of the other 7’s running around but he did have quite a good season and did look primed to take that next step. And then he got worse, and worse.

By the time a player hits 27, they kind of just are what they are 95% of the time.

In conclusion, kill me.

Like I said earlier, I honestly think Baz isn’t getting the scoops he used to get, this whole Brooks thing is the one story he has hung onto for the entire year…. Yes we wanted him in the pre-season but after he played poorly, we shifted our focus to Hastings as stated by many websites. I don’t believe that we aren’t chasing Hastings.

I really hope you’re right mate. 🤞

If Tigers are half smart, why would they let Hastings go, playing strong each game, and keep Brooks, playing anything but strong.
I believe we will get neither and both will stay at Tigers for at least 2023

Tigers obviously prefer Brooks otherwise they wouldn’t be playing Hastings at lock.

My sense on any talk about the push for Brooks ...it is all about Joey and his belief he can turn him into the second coming. I think if he isn't staking his rep on getting the best out of Brooks and lifting him to another level, then we don't have any ongoing desire to see him here above other potential talent on the market (I.e. Hastings).

And I only think that hype will increase now that Milf has made his decision....but we shall see? 😳

This whole narrative around needing a 7 after Milf decided to walk is weird to me.

He's not a 7, never was a 7, never will be a 7. Surely he wasn't the plan at 7, but seeing as it's the Knights probably was.

I think the feeling is that they never replaced Mitch Pearce - Clune was always seen as a back-up half and he’s still seen as that. And while Clune has replaced Pearce if you just look at the stat sheet - very similar attacking output - I think it’s fair to say that he hasn’t been able to replace the stuff Pearce brought to the team that you don’t see on the stat sheet. As a card-carrying anti-Pearceist it’s hard for me to say that, but it’s true I think.

They seem to only see Jake Clifford as a five-eighth and Will Pryce has agreed to terms from 2024 at least, so I don’t really know what the plan was with Milford besides maybe “get him in and figure the rest out later”. I don’t think the expectation was that he’d replace Mitchell, more just that they thought it was a chance to get a classy attacking player at a discount rate, and I reckon they’re still looking to sign a 7 if Milf stays.

Yeah reading the tea leaves it sounds like Sheens/Benji are happy to play Doueihi at 6 (smart) and let both Brooks and Hastings walk so they can reboot at halfback.

Doueihi is comfortably their best player, wish he played for us.

The Hastings aspect is very weird to me from the Tigers’ point of view, but it makes sense for the Dogs. Definitely fits their culture, expect him to say ‘Dogs Of War’ approximately 73 times every time he does a media interview.
