2023 Recruitment & Retention Thread

I thought Wests were taking the club ethos back to being we grow our own and recruit to fill the holes. It is a solid plan because a local junior who grew up dreaming of playing for the club should be willing to go the extra yard. Surely Bradbury was a no brainer to build around, in a couple of years if he had three or four mates out of last years flegg team in first grade with him, they are starting to build a brotherhood. I don't see a way forward for the club while we continue to rely on recruitment.

Wests and the knights are seriously full of crap, say one thing and then do the complete opposite.

They are slowly pushing the fans away.

Not happy with the way this recruitment has gone, too slow getting Miller especially as he is not top notch but have to accept that he or at least a competent f/b was required due to our lack of experience in that position. Don’t know why we had to supply a player to clinch the deal.
What little I have seen of Bradbury he looks to have potential but we already have 5-6 middle forwards in the mid to low 20’s ahead of him so no doubt he wanted an opportunity and surely would have only gone for that or more money so good luck to him.
Hope that now that is settled the squad, coach and training staff get stuck in to preparing for the season.
Lets get Dom signed, offer him a big deal but if he goes it will be like Bradbury, because he wants to, nothing we can do providing we have made a good offer.

If Dom wants to go let him...

This was on a FB group

"It's being reported that Dominic Young is the next player on Gus Gould's radar.

Apparently, Young wants to move to Sydney and is yet to commit to a club beyond 2023, so this could get interesting."

Could be dribble no source given

Should we ring Jaron Purcell or Dan Ticehurst or Noah and Tim Johhannsen or Cooper Jenkins or Cal Burgess.
We seem to let all those decent middle forwards go because we had Bradbury, Bryan and Martin, and now we just have Martin, and he is SG Ball aged.

The source is the Telegraph, see post #3745.

Dom and his manager have said he wants to stay but is looking at what offers are out there. He's talked to Souths and Canterbury. I expect he'll talk to a few others.
Souths seem a bigger threat.

With respect, outside of physical outliers like J Taumalolo, in no universe is an 18 year old prop who hasn’t even played NSW Cup yet a “no brainer to build around”.

I was initially ****ty about Bradbury. But seriously we need Miller for this year and next to have competent FB options. Between him, Hodgson, Pryce that’s 3 solid options to allow us to develop Sharpe or Armstrong. But they’ll take a good 3 years to be ready.

I think we need an experienced forward over an unknown Bradbury. Think we need to see how SG and Flegg go this year to see how the players who played well continue to improve

I think Bryan is still with the club but did his acl?

OK, maybe not a no brainer. But if we are actually going to try and raise some juniors, surely one that should be given every chance. Otherwise, chuck the junior system in, keep recruiting has beens from other clubs, keep making up the numbers.

We are never going to be able to recruit a premiership winning team. We either build on juniors or wallow in mediocrity. Max has long been earmarked as the best of one of the best bunches we have had in ages. The club was in a position to bring a batch of kids through together, like the mid ninties. They are botching it.

Herald article on Bradbury leaving quotes Flegg coach Gleeson as saying after the Flegg GF that Bradbury was the most likely to go on to an NRL career. Good thing he didn't say where.
Sounds like a repeat of another “lost” Knight junior from the past: Greg Bird.
And we all know how that turned out!

Crocker, Best, Crossland, B Jones, Saifiti twins, Fitz, Keeley will most likely be regular by end of year. Just cause we’ve moved a junior forward on doesn’t mean we don’t have juniors in our FG squad.

We need to relax. the club has only just begun re-jigging and commuting to the junior system. Some leave, some stay to be FG quality. Some don’t. It’s about picking the right ones to stay and develop to clubs best ability.

Fair call

We've also got Cooper Jenkins, I know he's coming back from an ACL but I think he's a better prospect than Bradbury. I wouldn't be surprised if Bradbury is back at some stage.

I thought Cooper Jenkins was the best forward in Flegg for the first 1/3 of the season and was going OK in reserve grade for a bit before doing his ACL and being gone for the year. He was still struggling to walk up stairs when I saw him in the crowd at the end of the Flegg season, but he must be getting close at some stage soon.
