2023 Recruitment & Retention Thread

Manly announced/confirmed Garrick resigning so there goes that, also extremely disappointed the knights couldn’t keep James Johnson he was impressive last year and I definitely thought he had a future with us.

An article I read was releasing Klem and Frizz would free up cap space to get Brooks. From all accounts he is coming 2024. But I hate to think what we are paying for him. All signs are not good, and most of the blame needs to be pointed at the coach in why we have gone backwards and now be in a hole. Any coach should have taken the side inherited from Brown to fringe finals.
Agreed.
Brooks will be 29 in 2024, by then I'd say he will be very past his (hoped to be) messiah days. He might have one or two decent seasons in him at best. Poor ol' Pearcey was only about 31 when our critics were calling him too old, past his prime etc... Then he left.
If we don't land Brooks in 2023 then I personally vote for a younger alternative for 2024. We will obviously need someone who'll see us through another bloody rebuilding phase, not an end of career retirement fundraising camp.

James Johnson should get a shot somewhere, but he is competing with younger players Vea'ila, Mapapalangi, Ferguson and guys his same age in Sasagi, Best and Lucas to get a centre spot at the Knights.
I don't know how other clubs stand for young centres, but someone must need one - we don't.

if we are going to take a near 30 yr old half for 2024 id be looking at moses over brooks everyday of the week.

Pezet has just signed a 2 year extension at the storm so that rules him out from coming back
You see young blokes demand starting positions so often these days. Good to see someone keen to learn from Bellamy, Munster, Hughes etc. Those guys are 28. Pezet could be an absolute gun by the time he's 23-24.

Re: Hastings and brooks I'd be happy to pay either 600k on a two year deal. Paying 1 mil per year for 4 years etc is just ensuring failure for years to come. Would rather struggle in 2023 then lock us in to struggling for 5 years...

Sign em both. Hastings 2 years starting 2023. Brooks two years in 2024. Hastings is injured right? Otherwise he would be in England squad?

The article below states Wests will sign Bateman.

There is speculation of a longstanding fued between Bateman and Hastings. Hopefully Hastings will be granted a release and we can sign him.

Jackson Hastings every god damned day of the week for me. Younger, taller, already beaten his youth induced demons (brooks have gotten worse over time) and he has the munster type unpredictability.
I'm in Sydney, the 'gong & Campbelltown for work all the time, I'm more than happy to help him move.
For the absolute life of me I can't fathom why we didn't land him last year but I'll begrudgingly forgive the inept recruitment team at the time if they can land him now.
Please Peter Parr, make it happen?!

If the Tigers have landed Bateman, Sheens is on his game, and they have done some good recruitment. I'm all in for Hastings also. But, the Knights, Joey, all seem hell-bent to sign Brooks, and move heaven and earth (Klem and Friz) to get him. Fingers crossed Knights recruitment is thinking about Hastings and table him an offer. We need some luck if the pieces fall into place.

* It has already been brought up but I think it's time to move our attention away from Brooks, we don't need the pressure of maybe loosing a player like Klem to help pay Brooks' wage. We should move our attention to Jackson Hastings who we seen have an immediate impact on the Tigers and their results, who is also on the outer at the club.
* With no official news of the Dylan Lucas signing, I feel like he isn't on a fulltime contract. If that's the case we should be looking at Daniel Atkinson (Italian centre & also a Q Cup half).
* For me, Lachie Miller is an obvious selection, missed out of Garrick so lets chase after Miller and get an early release because they have Dykes as backup fullback.
* And if i have done my math right we would have one spot left and I feel like we are lacking front row depth. Should either be looking at one of these PNG props (who have been killing it) or Matt Doorey from the bulldogs, only 22 years old and has a handful of experience and can do a job if called upon during the season.
