2023 Recruitment & Retention Thread

Fox Article talking about potential retentions, losses and targets for the Knights...

AS is typical with Fox, a lot of talking out of their ar$e re some of the performances including their assessment of Klemmer and Frizzell, for mine...

on the prospects radar they have flagged Herbie Farnsworth, Matt Moylan, Marty Tapau, Angus Crighton, Ryan Matterson and Adam Elliott

Their write up of our current players is a joke, do they even watch our games?

Herbie Farnsworth - interesting one not a position we probably need but I rate the kid
Matt Moylan - if there is any truth the Jake thing I would rather just keep Hoy than go for Moyza
Marty Tapau - we could use more experienced front row depth if it was for the right price
Angus Crighton, Ryan Matterson - take either of them
Adam Elliott - Not superb exciting but i guess he is an OK experienced forward.

Silly to get rid of but even sillier if we offer then a contract extension at the same value as their current one.
I don't disagree that the terms of any agreement are up for negotiation and that both Klem and Frizzell would expect that - whether they will be worth the reported amounts in a new contract and how long the offer is open for negotiation..

But to think we would ship Klemmer off and pay a large part of his contract to move him on, which is what the writer suggests, is just a joke based on his value to the club at the moment as our best forward IMHO

I think the club would like it if Klem would take a haircut on the next deal, but the idea we’d want to punt him is laughable. Still in his 20’s FFS and with the way he’s taken care of himself you’d expect him to remain valuable well into his 30’s.

Frizell won’t be around as long but that’s purely a function of him being a bit older than Klem. But again, why on earth would we be in a hurry to move him on?

Klemmer said on Toohey’s podcast earlier in the year he really wanted to see his NRL career out with the Knights and his loves Newcastle. I think his the type of player that the club values a lot I would be surprised to see him leave unless another club makes him a top target and blows us out of the water.

Baz reporting Knights now favourites for signing Pryce and Kai-Pearce. Be great gets if true. Pryce is back playing next week after serving suspension. Be good to get a look at him. Kai hasn't been in 1st for a few weeks.

Also stated Elliot decision and also Boyle are a couple weeks away. Dare say there may be a chance before June 30 to secure them.

So players the club are chasing and think they are a good chance of signing,

Simi, Utility/Centre
Pearce Paul Second row
Pryce 5/8 or fullback
Elliott 2nd row, lock (playing a bit of hooker ATM).
Milford 5/8 (I'd guess the least likely)

None of these players fill the leadership void vacated by Pearce.
Also desperately need an organising 7.
And Goal kicker.
I don't think any of these players replace Barnett's aggression, line speed and leadership either.

Price and Pearce are not likely for 2023 I believe, contracted, and will also need time to adjust to new surroundings and competition bit like Young did.
They shouldn’t be included in the quick fix plan and hopefully work out better than Hodgson.

The club is looking at getting both of them a release for 2023. But yes I agree it will probably take them time to adjust like Dom.

With Super League players you can get them before their contract is up if you’re willing to pay a transfer fee, which goes on the salary cap. Something we should think about having in the NRL instead of the current system of players just making a stink until their club has to release them and they get nothing in return.

Yep always been a fan, watching him live you really appreciate what he does. The amount of defenders he attracts his usually 4, with a quality hooker we make use of that…
