I want Luke here’: Sheens makes Brooks stance clear

Tigers coach Tim Sheens has made his stance clear on the never-ending speculation surrounding the Knights signing Brooks stating “I want Luke here”.

The 27-year-old has been linked with a move to the Hunter since Mitchell Pearce’s departure ahead of the 2022 season.

While Brooks is currently free to negotiate with rivals for 2024 and beyond, Sheens won’t be releasing the million-dollar halfback this season.

“It’s not our intention to release him, and there’s been no request from Newcastle. It’s been talked and talked and talked about,” Sheens told the SMH.

“He’s due to turn up here on November 14, and I’m looking forward to working with him. Benji (Marshall) and I are looking forward to getting our hands on him.

“Right at the moment, there’s been no movement from the Knights and we’re moving forward with him as our halfback.
Brooks could possibly be a decent player in the NRLW

Buzz saying next year's salary looks like it'll go from $350k to $800k but the minimum contracts will jump from $10k to $30k which means a lot of the big names would be facing pay cuts, and that Rugby Australia is already reaching out to players with their World Cup coming up. Tamika Upton is the only name mentioned as already being contacted but Jesse Southwell is on the radar too.

I can't read the story and I don't take a lot of notice of Union, but wasn't there a news story just last week about NZ beating England to win the women's WC, which was the first loss in 36 games for England (if I remember it correctly)?

Olympics coming up, not World Cup. My mistake,
I wouldn't mind the girls going off for a 7 tournament if it didn't disrupt our finals.
We lost the Tarsha Gale grandfinal this year because Jesse Southwell was in camp for the Commonwealth Games - so that was crap.
But if Upton wanted to win a gold medal at the olympics in the off season, that could only help us sell more tickets.

Talking of the girls, I notice 5 of the 31 girls in the Emerging Blues squad are from the Greater Northern Tigers - or Yasmin Clydesdale country in the upper Hunter/New England region.
There was an article earlier this year showing her as a PE teacher surrounded by young girls wanting to play league.
I think there were 3 others contracted to the Knights, 1 from Hunter Sports high and a heap from the central coast and the north coast.

She's a great player and had a sensational World Cup

From the Herald article on Caitlan Johnston:

While set for a well-earned break, Johnston is looking forward to the challenge of trying to win back-to-back premierships at the Knights.

A salary cap and collective bargaining agreement for the women's game is still to be locked in for 2023, but Johnston has no intention of leaving her hometown club.

She is confident the employment dramas will be sorted out and hopes players will soon be able to ink multi-year deals with clubs, unlike the season-long contracts they have signed in recent years.

"If there's deals that come out with multiple years, I'm more than happy to sign it but I don't think I'm going anywhere," Johnston said.

"I've found my place and this is where I'm comfortable. I think I'll be here for a very long time."

So photos of a fan event today show Hannah and Jesse Southwell in Knights gear signing merch.

So i think that means we now have;

Millie Boyle
Caitlan Johnson
Hannah Southwell
Jesse Southwell

Autumn-Rain Stephens Daly has signed with the Hurricanes rugby union side but should still be available for the upcoming NRLW season as far as I can tell.

Seen social media post from Caitlin Moran at training, looked like Kyra Symon and Kayla Romaniuk we’re there too.

Article about how the women's team showed a lot of grit in many games by coming from behind to win, and how the men's team could learn a lot from that.

In the article it says the salary cap this year was $350k between 24 players, so an average of just over 14.5k per player (the two marquee players got money from a different pool).
A lot of our junior boys get more than that. Several years ago I was told by the father of one kid that he got 20k a season to play Flegg and that barely covered his food and supliments bill.
Whatever defensive strategy the Women’s team is using, O’Brien and his assistants need to read their playbook. At present, the women would go a long way to holding our NRL team out, and would score tries against our men who are allergic to tackling.
A sad but true reality of the Knights experience!

Saw an article saying Autuum Raine Stephens-Daly has signed to play a season of Super Rugby in NZ but also wants to play NRLW afterwards, but says she hasn't signed with the Knights.
I suspect she'll want to be a playmaker somewhere, and we have those spots filled with Southwell, Dibb and Moran.

follow her on social media and she was jokingly/seriously asking @nrlknights to resign her. She hasn't played playmaker roll in a long while, she a strong winger. May want to reach out and be a FB though else where if opportunity arose

With the salary cap rising by 150% + to 850k I would hope that many of the girls will be in a position to take unpaid leave from work or only work limited hours for the 3 months or so of the season.
Depending on the size of the squad, they should average between 40 and 50k, with top players getting 100k or so and fringe players getting maybe 20k.

It was interesting to see for the Women's Rugby Union World Cup final this year in NZ there was a crowd of 42,500 at Eden Park and a tv audience of 1.3 million, or 64.9% of viewers in NZ at the time. It was also more viewers than watched the last time the All Blacks won the World Cup in 2015.

That $850k salary cap is quite disappointing and I don't think recognises the potential in investing in the WNRL and giving these players the chance to go fully professional.

850k is also a huge gamble as well, the females game ran at a loss this season and the salary cap is coming from the mens games profit. So i'm sure it is plenty enough considering its only 15 weeks of pay

Something rugby league never seems to quite get ... you need to invest in things to get a return on them.

Average viewing figures for NRLW rivals NRL games in the less popular tv times ... and that's despite the fact that the NRLW games are played in even less appealing timeslots: https://www.smh.com.au/sport/nrl/nr...ar-in-bumper-2022-season-20220407-p5abp8.html

With those figures the NRLW will more than be paying for itself in the next tv deal (assuming PVL has half a clue when negotiating, which he probably won't)

Invest? What do you mean? They are plenty well investing, 8.5m in salary to the girls and I'm sure there would be plenty more invested behind the scenes. Lets say 10m of investments aint bloody cheap, I think theyve done plenty enough to make it a code to be at the top in the womens game, now its up to them and the brand of footy and level on display
