2023 NRLW Recruitment & Retention Thread

What's the plan for going back-to-back?

Not sure if the CBA has even been signed off on yet but last I read they were sticking with 2 marquee players outside the cap per club, the salary cap was doubling, and I believe players will be able to sign for longer than 1 season now. I assume the longer season will mean squad sizes increase by 1 or 2 as well. 4 new teams with clean slates means we're going to see a lot of movement. NQ, Cronulla & Tigers all have strong state cup sides with juniors that they'll be focused on bringing back to build around. Raiders are the wildcard, no state cup team and their Tarsha Gale Cup side finished near the bottom so they're really starting from scratch. The "local" big fish they were banking on building around was Millie Boyle, which seems a long shot now though I'm sure they'll still try. They're going to have to fill the squad somehow so I expect they'll be throwing ridiculous money around.

Millie Boyle, Tamika Upton & Jesse Southwell would walk into a marquee contract at any club and name their own price. Wouldn't surprise me if the Tigers and/or Raiders throw a marquee spot at Caitlan Johnston too, as difficult as it is to imagine her leaving. I'm sure if you ask the majority of the squad right now they'd say they're staying put (a few already publicly did yesterday), but it's a lot easier to say that before the offers come in. Realistically we probably lose at least 1 that we wanted to keep. Wests have shown they're willing to spend on the women's team so should be able to keep the 2 that we really want without much fuss, which I'm guessing would be Boyle & Southwell if it comes down to it.

Kiana Takairangi, Romy Teitzel, & Emma Manzelmann are the ones from the top 17 that I'd confidently say won't be back next year.

On the recruitment front I doubt we see many, if any, established players brought in. Our hands will be full just trying to keep the current squad together. Getting Olivia Kernick back to replace Teitzel on the right edge would be the dream but very long odds. I expect we'll see a few juniors promoted instead. Mia Middleton (outside back), Matilda Jones (half) & Mercydes Metcalf (prop) are the 3 that come to mind from Tarsha Gale Cup this year and I'm pretty sure they were all training alongside the NRLW team throughout the season. Bree Chester (back-row) was the 3rd development player as well I think.

It's more like a real NRL recruitment situation than an NRL recruitment situation.

The real NRL teams have to offer careers and living situations and flexibility as well as money to get players.

The Wests group employs a lot of people in flexible jobs and are able to provide good living situations - i.e putting up all the Kiwi girls in serviced apartments last year.

Living in Newcastle is a lot cheaper than Sydney or Brisbane, especially for all the girls who already live here.

Wests are actually incredibly experienced at putting together quality squads in the real NRL by using all the non salary incentives.

I don't think we'll have any trouble keeping all the local girls or recruiting anyone who has to move from somewhere without a team, but getting Sydney or Brisbane locals to move will be difficult.

Article on Kiana Takairangi in the Newcastle Herald says she wants to stay with the Knights so I may already be wrong on a "confident" prediction, but again it's easy to say that now. My reasoning was that she owns and runs a gym in Cronulla so the Sharks or another Sydney team seem like a better fit than relocating for 3+ months.

Here’s a brief rundown on the star/key players current NRLW clubs who play for sides in the NSW/Qld State Premiership which are entering the comp next year:

Cronulla Sharks: Sam Bremner (Roosters), Tiana Penitani (Eels), Kennedy Cherrington (Eels), Holli Wheeler (Dragons), Quincy Dodd (Dragons).

Wests Tigers: Jess Sergis (Roosters), Tayla Preston (Eels), Kezie Apps (Dragons), Botille Vette-Welsh (injured - ACL).

North Queensland Gold Stars: Destiny Brill (Roosters), Shaniah Power (Roosters), Romy Teitzel (Knights), Emma Manzelmann (Knights).

That gives an idea of some of the player movement we might see. I think Bo Vette-Welsh may have already committed to the Tigers and Sergis would no longer be the priority #2 marquee signing for the Roosters (Raecene McGregor way more important) so I predict she goes to Wests as well. Cherrington I think is very much a Sharks girl so she’ll be one of theirs. And for my money Brill is the biggest fish in the player market out of all the players who will probably change clubs and she’d be a very smart pickup for North Queensland.

**** knows what the Raiders do. They’ve made noises about sharing a player base with the Brumbies. That’s the kind of thing which may pay off down the road but in the short term I’m backing them for the spoon next year.

We will lose Romy and Emma, Romy will be the Nth Qld captain I reckon and good on her.

If I was to bet which of our star players get poached, I maintain it will be Dibb, purely because she’s the most replaceable so there’ll be less of a fight to keep her. And she’s spoken openly about having the ambition of being a full time rugby league player so if someone comes with the right money…

Too early predictions for next season:

1. Newcastle Knights - The best 5 players or so are just on another level compared to those boasted by rival teams and the squad is rounded out by reliable do-a-job types (think Shanice Parker & Bobbi Law) who are perfect for what we need but won’t be big recruitment targets for others. Hard to imagine us losing anyone irreplaceable and even if we do it’ll be worse for other teams.

2. Brisbane Broncos - Even allowing for the star power they’ve lost, they seriously underachieved and I expect a bounce back year. Of the existing clubs I think they’ll benefit the most from dilution of the talent pool, and being the only Brisbane team is still an unfair advantage.

3. North Queensland Cowboys/Gold Stars - They’ve been bragging about their BMD Premiership players and making a lot of noise about how seriously they’re gonna take the NRLW. I believe them. I would bet too that there’s a pretty decent cohort of really talented players up there who’ve only not played NRLW because they can’t justify moving halfway across the country for 4 months to do it.

4. Sydney Roosters - They’ll probably keep an annoying number of their star players loyal due to the Politis Reality Distortion Field which tricks players into thinking he cares about them. But aside from the blip earlier this year, you don’t go broke betting on the NRLW Roosters to underperform. Having a grand total of 1 in-house developed player in their top side will catch up with them eventually too.

5. St George-Illawarra Dragons - I think they’ll be competent but not good enough to beat the top sides again. Even if they keep a lot of their stars, they’re a bit over-invested in first generation female players who’ve since been surpassed by the younger ones. Adjust this prediction down if Emma Tonegato gets poached.

6. Cronulla Sharks - They’ll get enough good players to be okay. It’s a smart, well-managed club. It’s just gonna be hard for all the Sydney teams to be really really good IMO. I think it’ll be neck and neck between them and Saints for 5th/6th.

7. Parramatta Eels - Despite the GF run, and Simaima Taufa being a great player to build a club around, I think they’re about to hit the “finding out” phase of “what if we ****ed around and just taped our team together out of whoever we can pick up from the NSW Premiership?”

8. Wests Tigers - See North Queensland - another side who’s made a lot of noise about their ambition in the women’s game - but it’s Wests, so they won’t be good at it.

9. Gold Coast Titans - See St George-Illawarra, but make the players and coaching worse. It’s a disgrace they got a license. They will never be good.

10. Canberra Raiders - Headed for a diastrous 0-9 first season I reckon. May come good down the line though.

Teams like Canberra etc will find a lot of talent at the world cup.
The poms are taking the women's game pretty seriously and with the current exchange rate, they'd all be keen for a 3 month paid holiday.

Just as well it’s only a 3 month season, because English players struggle to last much longer in Canberra!

Article about how the women's team showed a lot of grit in many games by coming from behind to win, and how the men's team could learn a lot from that.

In the article it says the salary cap this year was $350k between 24 players, so an average of just over 14.5k per player (the two marquee players got money from a different pool).
A lot of our junior boys get more than that. Several years ago I was told by the father of one kid that he got 20k a season to play Flegg and that barely covered his food and supliments bill.

Emma Paki is getting scans this week but there's fears she's done her ACL. NRL Physio thinks that's almost certainly the case based on the footage of the injury. They said on the broadcast that the medical team didn't think it was too serious once they'd taken her off and checked it out, so looks like they're 0/2 on diagnosing ACL injuries this season. Hannah Southwell said the plan for her was to get back for a few NSW Premiership games before the NRLW kicks off so a similar injury should mean Paki is ready or close to ready by the start of next season too. Think she was a good find and I would definitely be trying to bring her back if she'll be ready to go.

Makenzie Weale & Tiana Davison are the other 2 finds that I'd bring back if possible. Weale is a Brisbane girl so may be difficult if the Broncos or Titans decide they want her now but she seems the most likely internal option to replace Romy Teitzel. Would like to see Davison get more experience playing league in the meantime either home in NZ or with our NSW Premiership side. Jakiya Whitfeld is another that should be looking to get more experience if league is the path she wants to continue on. She's young and athletic enough to be a good player but has plenty to learn. I'd say she'll get another chance next season if she wants it, either here or at another club. Nicole Nathan & Tamsin Barber never seemed to even be in contention and got leapfrogged for a debut by Jess Gentle so I doubt either of them will be back.

Quotes from Adam Elliott in the Herald. More hot air but it’s the off-season.

Elliott, who has settled in Merewether with Boyle, Newcastle's co-captain, believes the Knights can have sustained success in the NRLW despite the entry of four new teams in 2023.

"They can. They've got some really good people that care about each other," he said.

"I think there will be a big core of this group stay together because they really like playing together and how successful they are.

Article on Caitlin Johnston says she had been working as a teacher's aid in Elermore Vale but recently had to give it up because of her football commitments. If that’s still the case whenever players can start signing with clubs for next season then it’s probably something to be concerned about.

Article on Tietzel.
Doesn't say if she is staying or going, but it sounds like she isn't the done deal to go we all thought.
I think the Cowboys will need to make her a good offer, because she enjoyed winning a premiership and thinks we can do it again.

If these girls stay together i think it would be a good bet they will get another title next season if not more than that. They were a class above pretty much everyone else ..
They had a few lapses but they will only get better and as far as there coach goes give him the mens team too .

Upton says she's planning on staying with the Knights and has remained in Newcastle since the season ended. Obviously hopes we can retain as any players as possible but knows every player in the comp is a free agent and there will be plenty of movement once the CBA is finalised.

Having Upton tied up is a big plus.
When you look at it, the only two players we have who couldn't be replaced are Upton and Jesse Southwell.
They are rare talents we are lucky to have.
It would be nice to keep as many players as possible from the GF winning side, but anyone other than Upton and Southwell we could lose without really hurting our chances much, because we could either buy or develop a replacement.

Yeah add Boyle to that list its hard to replace the best prop in the game . The other one i hope stays is Kira Dibb she had a hell of a lot to do with how we went ...

I actually thought Kirra had a bit of a slow start to the season for her...I got the sense that part of the problem was some sort of injury issue early in the season. But the other thing I got was that it has taken a while for her to find her 'place' in the side with such a dominant half like Jesse running the show.

It's not a criticism of Kirra, it just seemed she was at a bit of a loose end to figure out how her and Jesse could work together and compliment each others game in the first 3 or 4 rounds... but she definitely came back up to her dynamic best at the back end of the season and I do definitely want her to stay

In the Sunday Herald today.

I want Luke here’: Sheens makes Brooks stance clear

Tigers coach Tim Sheens has made his stance clear on the never-ending speculation surrounding the Knights signing Brooks stating “I want Luke here”.

The 27-year-old has been linked with a move to the Hunter since Mitchell Pearce’s departure ahead of the 2022 season.

While Brooks is currently free to negotiate with rivals for 2024 and beyond, Sheens won’t be releasing the million-dollar halfback this season.

“It’s not our intention to release him, and there’s been no request from Newcastle. It’s been talked and talked and talked about,” Sheens told the SMH.

“He’s due to turn up here on November 14, and I’m looking forward to working with him. Benji (Marshall) and I are looking forward to getting our hands on him.

“Right at the moment, there’s been no movement from the Knights and we’re moving forward with him as our halfback.
