2023 NRLW Recruitment & Retention Thread

Curtis Woodward is a freelancer with a website no one reads, who I only know about cos he once did a now-deleted angry tweetstorm raving about how his men’s NRL media accreditation didn’t work at the gates for women’s Origin. The bloke is flat out counting past ten. Let’s wait for a real source before we start to worry.

And now the Newcastle Herald reporting the Knights are resigned to losing her.

Said all along we'd lose someone we really wanted to keep, was only made more difficult once the marquee spots were reduced. Still should be one of the best, if not the best, middle forward trios in the comp if we can keep Johnston, Southwell, Predebon.

Even more than the boys, the girls have to wring every dollar they can out of their career.
If Upton goes with her, that will be much worse.
Boyle is one member of a pack of forwards and we can survive without her, but Upton is a match winner.

Clubs would be handing marquee contracts with blank cheques to both Upton & Southwell, we'd be very fortunate if we keep both. Upton is the best player in the comp in my opinion but the club would have to go with Southwell if it comes down to one or the other.

Well bollocks.

I guess yeah tough calls had to be made and she would have been priority #3 on the retention list.

CJ, Predebon, H Southwell, Romaniuk, Davison has hung around… should still have a strong middle rotation. Another prop on the same level as CJ and Preds showing up wouldn’t be the worst thing though!

I'm sure Upton came out start of this year stating she wanted to stay here for multiple season. Guess we'll see. Priority as stated above is signing Jesse Southwell to long term deal. Cannot and I emphasise, CANNOT lose her!!

And nobody has identified the 'Stampie' in the room - the most financially flush club in the comp, with a very strong roster already, has bought the marquee forward in the game, when we are trying to spread the talent pool around the new franchises coming into the comp...

El gran sombrero ataca de nuevo 🤬

The more things change, the more they stay the same

My info wasn’t this guy either!

Roosters are losing McGregor who just won the Dally M, and the Dragons are already losing a few big names. Was always going to be more movement at the top of the list rather than the squad fillers.

At the end of the day we gave Boyle & Upton the most money to come here and they won a comp for us. Can’t really complain if one or both of them want to do that again, as Billy said above they really should be maximising their earnings while they can, even more-so than the men.

It’s a good thing for the growth and professionalism of the women’s game.

Yeah was gonna mention Raecene is off to the Dragons.

Huge pressure on Millie and I’m assuming Izzy Kelly to carry them to wins with sheer physicality.

The way the women’s cap is set up, most women’s players will be on the same minimum wage - this will hopefully give us scope to attract a few of the girls who are the best players on that tier just below the elite girls getting the bigger payday. Good coach, just won the comp, still a strong roster given how good our local girls are.

Millie is a big loss, no sugar coating it, but I think we should still have the best team if we can keep Tamika. Southwell sisters, Moran, CJ, Clydsdale, Predebon, Higgins all a dead cert to stay i would imagine.

Yeah - I have no problem with them maximising their income, while they can....

But I'd be keen to see them get picked up as a key marquee for a new franchise rather than Uncle Nick's smoke and mirrors finance operations, just trying to buy another trophy in the NRLW comp

On a separate note...did Manzelman end up heading back up north? Of our whole team in 2022, she was my standout favourite

Clydesdale took a step up to the elite level in the World Cup.
I suspect that might be because she was putting in 60 hours a week to RL, rather than working a fultime job and travelling 5 hours return journey to train.
But we probably still need to find money for southwell x 2, Johnston, Clyesdale and Upton as elite players.
