Fletcher Sharpe discussion

Someone on twitter the other day. Tried to find the post again but couldn’t. Was hoping someone else may have heard how he’s doing

My thoughts on developing Sharpe.

He has the potential to become an elite level spine player.

When Nathan Brown had a young guy named Ponga with elite level potential, he pretty much organised the entire pre-season around developing Ponga. Those "opposed sessions" he was so found of were nothing more than drills to get Ponga involved with playmaking.

Melbourne recently put an enormous amount of time and resources on a kid named Pezet. They gave him a top 30 paycheck and made him captain of their Flegg side when he was SG Ball aged, and as soon as he was old enough to play seniors, they made him starting halfback for their Qld cup feeder. They had him running sides around the park way before he was ready.

Back to Sharpe - O'Brien identified him as a potential 6 or 7 and put him in there, despite Sharpe not having many of the skills needed yet. Sharpe wasn't even allowed to kick for many weeks and was just working on support play and a bit of passing.

The new coach, in his first presser, made it clear he has been thinking about Sharpe and talked about wanting him to get involved and mentioned halves as his future.

Sharpe could do a job on the wing, but this is a guy with the potential to be a million dollar spine player. He might not get there, but the coach has to put the time and resources into him that Nathan Brown put into Ponga and Melbourne put into Pezet. If that means Sharpe has to play either 1, 6 or 7 in reserve grade to develop his skills, instead of doing the job of a 200k winger, that's what should happen.

I have no doubt that spine positions will open during the season and Sharpe is first backup at worst, but he should train all pre-season for 1, 6 and 7 and never, ever, be put on a wing again.

We’re not Melbourne though, we can’t afford to have a player as good as Sharpe in reserve grade just for his development, they need him in first grade.

Not to mention, they’d be torn to shreds by the media and his manager would want him out of here immediately.

There’s just no world where that happens here. The horse has well and truly bolted with Sharpe, he has to be in first grade somewhere.

Well, if the guy who oversaw the worst attack in decades think it’s a good idea…

That same guy decided the player in your profile pic was better off in a new position when it made little sense to those of us watching him as a centre/winger, as well. Not saying every decision he makes is going to work out (clearly) but it’s a very flimsy argument to make. Where do you draw the line?

I just can’t reconcile AOB going to the Dogs as their attack coach. There must be some other reason for this appointment as it just doesn’t make any sense for the guy who oversaw the worst attack in the 2025 NRL to be somehow improving the attack of the Dogs?
Thoughts?

I see it as a prank on Leo. Hey, you know when we said we could make you improve, well...here's the guy to do it!! (in walks AOB).

Oh, to see his face!!

He could be a terrible head coach but a good assistant like Trent Barrett

Was he an attack coach when he won those premierships with the roosters?

Moses is the most likely answer. Was always going to be either Manly, Cowboys or Bulldogs. Gus would owe Moses a favour given he got them Galvin

I actually think AOB did some good development through the years for us. He may not have gotten the results we wanted but made the 8 most years, we simply had a bad roster through mismanagement of the cap. he probably played his part in that though.

He's also mates with Ciraldo and Seibold I think? So had connections both at Manly and the Dogs.
