Toohey's News

Imagine letting Frizell go and then JSaf gets injured 💀💀

Meanwhile everyone's all happy that McCarthy and Schiller are soaking up 500k to play Cup
Not sure everyone is happy with it, but that’s their contract, you can’t blame them for accepting an offer that was good for them.

I like it how people get the ****s when a player wants out and the club gives in instead of showing some spine. Then when the club wants a player gone before the contract is up but the player shows some spine, then he’s nothing but a **** for it.
How dare they look after themselves

The club isnt a charity. Its a competitive sporting organisation that exists to win, its primary objective, to which everything else subordinates, is to win. It doesnt exist to provide employment to its staff.

Sticking to your contract is your right as a player. And its also pretty hard to blame a young guy for clinging on for dear life. But if the club has asked you to leave because your contract is not in the best interests of the club, you can choose to stay, but your presence is thereafter counter productive to the competitive aims of the club. So much so that we may now lose Frizell for next year.

The Knights have sucked for 20 years. We are building something delicate and fleeting. While players are legally entitled to put themselves before the club, its also unreasonable to expect those players to be blameless for the consequences of their self interest

I look at it like this

A club offers a player a contract and the player likes it and agrees to the contract

Things change over the period of the contract eg new coach, player doesn’t develop and perform how the club expected

The club then has every right to go to the player and say, look we want to go in a different direction and we won’t be offering you a new deal. You are more than welcome to have a look around and find another opportunity for yourself, we won’t stand in your way.

If you can’t find a new deal or you want to stay and fight to earn a new deal, that is also fine

The player has every right to stay and fight if that’s what they choose to do.

They do however have to consider their options after their contract ends if they stay and remain in reserve grade. That would reduce their value to other clubs in the NRL and Super League

Basically, there is no harm in asking the player so long as it is a question, not a demand from the club

Clubs are commercial entities, but players aren't? And I thought Pauline/Gina hated Australian workers.

Such a bad take, and it doesn't even make sense... What are players expected to do, step aside to unemployment because the club (you) would prefer to keep Friz...a veteran bench player who could be a help next season, but also could be blocking a younger player with a longer-term future....solid reasoning...lol.

OK then, by that token, the next time a player wants out because some manager, probably named Moses, has found him a higher-paying deal elsewhere, that should be OK too, right?

PS. Nothing wrong with mutually agreed releases/trades, but being down on Schiller because he didn't like the Dragons' offer or possibly didn't want to play for Flanagan seems a tad unfair.

Parr has moved on several players who still had contracts and he has done it by finding them a better deal somewhere else.
Parr and probably also O'Sullivan have contacts at many clubs.
I think they'll find places for several guys at Saints or Bears or ESL - and the last people to find out will be us, because Toohey dropping hints that they'll find a spot for Frizz is as close to inside info as we get these days.

Schiller/McCarthy/whoever well within their rights to stick around if they want, any blame should be directed at those who signed them. Player option for McCarthy why?
Friz also completely justified in trying to get what he thinks what he's worth, if that's somewhere else I'll be disappointed.
The Niukore signing is puzzling, he's looked terrible this season. Friz far and away stronger.
Pretty sure it was Adam Doyle or Clint Zammit who gave Schiller and McCarthy their current deals.

However the Niukore signing for next year is baffling. I'm hoping POS sees something in him no one else does.

Players aren't charities either, to be fair. Let's hope that in deciding to stay, it lights a fire for them and they prove the club wrong, justifying their spot in the team.

What are people expecting from Niukore? I'm guessing he plays middle, rather than on an edge, i don't think that's a secret. I'm not expecting big run metres from him. I am expecting a guy that has the opposition looking out for him in the ruck. Someone who brings a genuine fear factor. Someone who dominates in tackles consistently. The guy is made of granite. I don't think his highlights reel is going to be huge but I reckon he'll earn plenty of respect from the fan base. He gives us a point of difference in the pack. I can imagine JMcK trying to show the old dog that he is just as tough.

Clubs and players may both be fairly described as 'commercial entities'

One entity, the Club, serves the interests of hundreds of thousands of people. The other 'entity' is the player who serves a very limited set of interests.

So yea, commerical self-interest on the part of the player, while legally protected, has consequences that effect the broader interests of the club and its constituents. So the two are hardly comparable
