Toohey's News

Schiller/McCarthy/whoever well within their rights to stick around if they want, any blame should be directed at those who signed them. Player option for McCarthy why?
Friz also completely justified in trying to get what he thinks what he's worth, if that's somewhere else I'll be disappointed.
The Niukore signing is puzzling, he's looked terrible this season. Friz far and away stronger.

While hunt/winter might have bigger long term prospects than Mcarthy, he is I think a way more seasoned and rounded player now, and I’m glad he is staying as otherwise after Best all our next centre prospects like hunt, winter,Steve in top 30 next year are I think under 21 years old and have about 15 combined games and that’s all from Hunt
To Say that its selfish for them to stay and it will cost Fritz is ridiculous
McCarthy is probably only on around 150-200 anyway
Schiller probably bit more like 300 but still, if we have injuries to Greg/dom then again all kids with no games under their belts.

Main thing I though was that Frizz was going to take Sullivans top 30 spot, so he would have been on more than a development spot/deal, so unless it was worded wrong and only have that $150k spare in cap as I think that’s roughly minimum wage for top 30, so do we already have somebody else signed, or is there a junior about to be promoted into that Will Sullivan spot as there isn’t many forwards in Flegg or cup banging door down to promote so if its another back/half then we will be short looking in forwards again next year

McCarthy is a reserve grade outside back. He has some talents and strengths such as his height and aerial ability. But he isn’t even carving up Cup.

He is 2, 3, 4 years older than Winter, Seve etc. Of course he is currently best suited to FG. But hes probably the least likely of the lot to have an extended career in FG.

There's a reason POS wanted to let him go

Our middle depth really hasnt been tested this year, i think you really need to find a few dollars to keep friz on another year even if it means he plays some ressies (still easily in our best 17 imo). Multiple injuries to jsaf hopwood. Saulo or mooney at the same time and we will be wishing we had a guy like friz on the books.

Imagine letting Frizell go and then JSaf gets injured 💀💀

Meanwhile everyone's all happy that McCarthy and Schiller are soaking up 500k to play Cup

What a load of nonsense.

McCarthy is young and developing under good coaching. Schiller has had his moments but struggled with consistency, as so many young players do when stepping up to the NRL. Both players signed contracts in good faith, and there's no reason why they should be looked down upon for expecting those contracts to be honoured.

Friz has been a great servant, as has Gags, but the club is sensibly building for the long term.

No one is doing anything wrong here.

We won the spoon last season; get a grip.

That's pretty standard for reserve grade outside backs, but also literally no one has said that. We're simply not blaming them personally for signing contracts the club put in front of them, nor choosing to honour those contracts instead of uprooting their lives for the sake of the club. That would be an insane thing to expect of an employee in any workplace. Why would they owe the Knights that?

Hopwood, Manulelua, ESL, will all be hanging down the door soon. Next year Hopwood will be almost starting, the others will be great bench or better. Friz is good but is aging and if he doesn't want a smaller contract than thats on him. I think we will retain him though and he will be good for the others but we will see.

But you’re arguing elsewhere about younger guys not being able to replicate what older guys can do in the forwards, then wanting more experienced guys cut in the backs to leave 18 year olds as back ups
I’ve watched a fair few NSW cup games and Kyle and Schill have been often best backs on the team
Wether that’s their peak, who knows, but Mcarthy never really did anything wrong when he got into first Friday either
You cant have it both ways as if Schiller and Mcarthy said go, we wont be buying replacements either most likely so that’s just another 2 18 year olds from pathways that would replace them and we worlds be up crap creek without a paddle once 1 injury strikes

And it has to get to a time where mid 30 year old players are happy to take $150 or200 or 250 grand as being a footy player is still a better job than not being a footy player

Frizz would be good to keep, but its always a massive risk with these older guys and for injury sake but his experience and work ethic is obviously a great feature, but for how many dollars is too many though

And thats o’sulliovans job and why he has got us to this stage now

They'll be better than they are this year. But they aren't coming close to replicating the output brought by JSaf and Frizell
No they won’t, but that’s the point of bringing talent through. We’re lucky we’re in a position to have 2-3 forwards to take up the mantle. Being a development club means you need to let player go at the right time so that the junior you put time in come through. Hopwood, Crouch, Elijah and Hola are good to go for middles bench replacements and the more first grade they get the better they’ll be.

Contracts are contracts.

I’d be annoyed if we were pressured to let players leave.
So, I don’t think we should be putting pressure on players to leave.
Mutually beneficial scenarios aside.

Sure, have some honest communication and see if there is a mutual decision. “You don’t really feature in our plans for the future, likely to be playing Cup for the rest of your contract”. “If you can secure a few years somewhere else, you should consider it”. But at the end of the day, if somebody wants to collect their $$$ sitting in reserves, so be it.

We don’t really hear about the discussions. Maybe these guys are determined to rekindle their careers and just need a chance. No problem with players wanting to see out their contracts, especially if we are looking to enforce contracts if somebody agitates for a move.

I do think players hold a lot of power in negotiations.

As for Frizz. Similar to Gagai (prior to last weekend), for the right price I’d be happy. I think they still offer more than their replacements would in 2027. But the club don’t only have to worry about 2027, they have to think about 2028, 2029 etc. Hopefully we look back in 3-5 years and say we got much more out of prioritising some of these young fringe first graders than we would have if we lost them and prioritised a year or 2 max out of these veterans.

Friz is obviously only making noise because he wants to stay and might be hoping that the club can find a little more $$. It seems both parties want the same outcome, they just now need to find middle ground.

It’s also good that young fringe guys also want to stay. This means we are doing something right and players are not bailing to the closest rival option. Players backing themselves is a great thing for depth and competition in the squad, and the fact that both those players want to stay, to me it says they see the club is going in the right direction…. They are on the inside everyday…we aren’t. Especially Schiller who may have played more NRL if he went to the dragons when he had a chance. This gives me so much more confidence in what the club is doing behind the scenes.

I trust POS understands a lot better than a single soul in this forum about the cap and players coming through and so on.

I’m sure he will try to find some money for him but I’m also sure he won’t be stupid, if he feels like he can’t get the money, the cost of keeping him is to great ie losing players etc, or it’s simply time for Frizell to go than I’m sure he knows what he is doing.

You don’t get his reputation by luck or by screwing up a lot

But we've basically re-signed Ponga/Lucas/Best as key signings without much noise (I ignore the crap from Foxsports/SMH in regards to Ponga)

Sometimes it does drag out but no ones losing sleep over these ones like Frizell, we've seen them before.
I’m talking more about players nearing the end of their careers. You keep them on the minimum out of the salary cap, but nudge nudge, wink wink there is a $150k club ambassador role waiting for them once they hang up the boots.

Or there’s a nice part time job for their wife for a couple years of $150,000
