If you look at any side, five years apart, the roster will be totally different ... there will usually only be 1,2,3,4,5 players who have carried over.
Unfortunately we are really in a situation where we need to reset the roster, but that's a pretty natural part of the sport? That 2020-24 side topped out at making the top eight, let's hope the next one has a higher ceiling. Brown a huge part of that ... Ponga and Best will be the two main players who span both eras, for me.

Is he in the top 40 players in the comp? The Storm alone have 4 players better than him. He is not a game winner, he's a complementary piece.
Sure, but if you look at the Raiders who everyone likes to clown, they have been super relevant twice now in the past 6 seasons, while their clive churchill winning marquee player up and left them.
Meanwhile the knights haven't finished top 4 since Joey retired. Every other club (except for the Phins) have finished top 4 at least once in that period. We have been the most mediocre side in the comp over the last 20 years and we're sitting in the middle of rebuild no 13? But it will work, this time, because reasons....
What's the alternative, keep backing Cogger to turn it around?
Also with POS if you take the Brown deal out because that's contentious and yet to be proven (although it put to bed the "Newcastle can't sign players" comments).

He tried to keep Leo but refused to play Fanua-Blake sort of money, he's extended Newcastle boys who haven't reached their ceilings but are the sorts of squad players every team needs and who are typical of the sorts of Newy boys who end up at teams like the Storm doing a job, he extended Gags because we need leadership, he's brought some new you talent to the club but hasn't over paid for any of it. etc.

What's the cap 13 million? Close to 3 million of that already spent on our 2 marquee's, he had better be some sort of wizard.
As others have alluded only thing that makes sense is Ponga moving in if we are to have any sort of balance.

Brown was the rebuild. AOB come in and his tenure the last 5 year was to take us to the promise land. Best we got was 5th and week two finals.
It’s somewhat a rebuild now. Weather he is the coach to roll through the next one.
Pretty sure we knew the cap situation when we signed Brown . He was the final piece of the puzzle .To take us from the eight to the for .Yeah right!

DeCourcey is signed for 2026 along with Hopwood till 2028 and of course Gagai has MO that seems likely to be taken along with Frizell.

The Dylan Brown contract is a bet that that amount of money won’t be overs in a few years. POS would deny it because he wants to talk his player up but I’m sure he knows it’s an overpay in the short term. He’ll be judged harshly if the cap doesn’t go up as expected.
No one in their right mind would extend beyond 2028 right now unless their deal has ratchet clauses or pays a set % of the cap… unless their money in the short term was too good to pass up. That’s the calculation at play there.
If in a few years, an equivalent sense Brown is essentially making what would today be $7-900K, then yeah it’s a great deal for us. The money to re-sign key players magically appears in the cap come 2028-29 purely via the cap going up but Brown’s contract not moving with it.

Cap has gone up 30% in the last 5 years, let's say that happens again for arguments sake. Brown on his deal bumped to the apparent max value of 1.4m then discounted by 30% is still a million dollar player in today's terms.

Will believe it when I see it. I actually think the introduction of the new teams is going to really expose the lack of depth right across the comp.
So, logically instead of just dumping additional revenue into the clubs' top 30 only for them to fight over the same pool of players, they might actually commit a big chunk to second tier and development competitions.

I always get told how much cap space we have then the reality of the signings suggests we never do.
That one bloke was saying wonderboy POS (who doesn't overpay for players) is giving Wil Sullivan and Taj Annan 300k a year, which suggests a few actually playing firsts might be on more than expected. I reckon the upgrades for Lucas/Crossland/Sharpe might raise eyebrows also.
