Toohey's News

Re Hastings: I read the article more as there wasn’t anyone willing to take over his contract for the rest of this season, nothing about next season, I could be wrong though. I’ll be very surprised if he doesn’t end up at a super league club next year.

That Dragons kid would have been silly to sign with us tbh, he’s not going to get picked over Dylan and Fletcher. So he’d sort of just be waiting around two years to see if Kalyn doesn’t re-sign.

Whereas, taking Lachlan Ilias’ jersey? Pretty doable.

Ref could be the worst cheat in the history of the game, but players still can't say it. Getting himself sent off and suspended and potentially getting a ref off side with the club helps no one and isn't worth venting that frustration. Tyrone's not a kid he's played for the All Blacks he should know better.

He’s played for the Māori All Blacks and the All Blacks b team, but not the fully fledged All Blacks.

Nothing new in today's Toohey's news really.

Says KPP has a big offer from a rival club and Knights have made him a lower offer, so they expect to lose him.

Says that Ponga has never been a big talker and Sharpe and Cogger are pretty quiet, which might be one reason we are underperforming. Says Gamble never shuts up.

Says Gagai is keen to play on and is negotiating a deal for next year.

Says POS is not getting into a slanging match over Dom, but says we have written permission from the Roosters to talk to him. Says Dom was keen and had arranged somewhere to stay in Newcastle. Says we are still keen to sign Dom.

I thought obriens whole reason for wanting to move Sharpe was because of how good a talker he was?

We need to remember that most of what Toohey posts these days is his own opinion rather than fact. There’s a big difference between being vocal at training though and on the pitch in pressure moments when things aren’t going your way.

The fact that a 20 year old fullback/winger was more vocal in pre season than Cogger and Ponga is hugely concerning but not at all surprising.

The motivational voices, from what I've seen, are Elliot, Gamble, and now Lucas. I 100% agree, Lucus should/will be a future captain of the Knights. I don't know if Dyl Brown is a voice, to me, he isn't. Either way, I would rather Lucus as he is a Newcastle junior.

Think Ponga talks, but I think it’s more to do with organising the defence as a fullback. You’d probably get similar talk from most fullbacks that have played a season of NRL.

I think captaincy does lend itself to the fullback or halfback, they can often see the big picture. I can see Ponga being vocal in pre season, encouraging the younger guys. Even 1 on 1 pre game. But it’s been pretty clear, he’s not the person to communicate productively on field. Even things like managing the ref and slowing the game down by asking for explanations etc. He is quiet in nature and a pretty relaxed and casual personality. But frankly, I don’t think he’s performing or putting his body on the line to justify asking others to.

Contrast that to say Lucas. He is putting in every game. His body is on the line. He is in a great position to be trying to get everyone up to scratch and motivate by being a role model.

I think it was Matty Johns’ podcast, and Jack Johns advocated that Gamble was one of the best sledgers he has played with. Commented that he just never shuts up. I think he has that ‘ego’ component to hold people accountable as well.

Talking a lot isn’t always a good thing in a footy field, Gamble sledges a lot which is bad and good as it can either throw someone of their game or cause them to go in super mode and turn it on.

It could be a case of having a lot to say but nothing worth listening to, talking for the sake of talking is bad on the field unless you actually have things to say i.e defensive reads, plays, weaknesses. Just sledging all day is close to useless.

I believe Lucas should be named captain he is already a leader he isn’t scared to say what’s on his mind and hold others accountable.

He also seems like the type to put his hand up when he is in the wrong and won’t shy away from it, reminds me of Boyd Cordner as he was the exact same.

I think Lucas is 10000% the long-term captain of the side, and in many ways looks to be captain out there now.

The media scrutiny/potential backlash associated with replacing KP with him mid-season would be unfair/unnecessary pressure for Lucas IMO, a decision to be made at the beginning of a pre-season so everything washes over by the time we get to round 1.

No need for drama around it at all, Ponga can just say he's decided to step down and focus on his own game at the end of the season, but will still be a leader in the team and part of the leadership group. Jan or Feb we announce Lucas as the new captain.

Well run clubs do this sort of thing very smoothly, I'd expect Parr to know what to do.
