Kalyn Ponga discussion

Just watched Joey say he doesn't think Ponga will go to half because he's a f/back and with the concussions he's had no way would you want him tackling forwards.. Joey said he knows its been talked about internally but said he doeswnt think it will happen .
So i guess we will still need a good 7 .

So did they click there fingers and all of a sudden they were worth hundreds of millions or did they build it up with good management .
I think your missing my point. Some business can have large balance sheets, despite poor management or average management. I'm a consultant type and see lots of businesses financial and systems. Many that are clubs, NFP, church groups etc can have lots of assets despite poor financial management. They don't operate in the hard edge of commerce.

I don't think Gardner just because their bank account is flush, is necessarily a business administration genius.

I hope he is, but there isn't much evidence of it.

I'd check out the knights financials before and after the wests takeover. I think that gives you a pretty good idea of wests financial acumen

Add to that, we are much better resourced now and are one of the few clubs who compete at every junior level and run a nrlw side.

I'd check out the way Wests have gone from a moderately successful suburban club to owning half the hospitality venues in the district under Gardner's watch.
I don't have the actual numbers, but if he hasn't grown the business ten fold I'd be surprised.

Not much evidence your kidding right, have you seen what they own .

I get that it is confusing that they are loaded, and I'm saying that they suck. Im not arguing that they bring cash and agree that's a good thing.

The thing is though, you can have a good balance sheet ( what they own) and be a poor management team. It doesn't necessarily follow that a successful Not For Profit (NFP) business, which West's are, is well run. Typically NFP's executives are inept. Sometimes hilariously so. I know it's easy to make up stories, but I've dealt with many CEOs / CFOs etc in the NFP sector that are jokers, as have many of my colleagues.

So my point is we are owned and run by a protected species NFP that has pokies revenue..pretty much anyone can run that... We are not being run by a Macquarie, PWC, Lend Lease etc which would drive a strong performance culture and are from the private sector.

Hopefully Parr is the answer.

And I'm saying it is incredibly difficult to break even running an NRL club. If they are well resourced, they are often running at a loss. Throughout our history we were often existing mouth to hand at the knights. Since wests took over we are much better resourced and actuallu making money. Don't worry about how wests are going, just have a look at how the knights are financially now.

Ive got no issue with Gardner from his business side of things, just that he should leave the football decisions and comments to someone else.

We have Parr now so hopefully he takes a backseat, and if he oversteps I hope Parr sets the expectation.

The Panthers (football organisation) does not make money. That juniors program which is the envy of the comp? It’s a money pit. Gardner wanted to know what it’d take to replicate that in Newy, Brennan gave him a ballpark numerical figure, and he was out on his arse a few months later.

They couple this with a much better membership scheme than us, the stuff they put in their member pack might as well be a bag full of gold bullion compared to what we get.

Panthers Leagues decided the benefits of having a team which is the envy of the rest of the NRL, of committing to a long-term vision of excellence, was worth the financial outlay.

Wests are ruthless and bottom line driven and the Knights will continue to make money I’m sure, and their future as an NRL club is now secured pretty much indefinitely. But Penrith don’t win because Panthers Leagues runs the club like a great business. It’s more like the relationship between a billionaire Premier League club and it’s owner - the footy club and its sugar daddy.

Also all of Penriths wealthy sponsors help in this regard aswell. I know Hertz put in lots of $$$$ for little return.

How DO the Knights actually make money as a footy club without Wests losing money holding them up?
I’d understand if the first graders looked like they had an ounce of pride in themselves, but the way they are now, I can’t imagine membership and bums on seats holding them up next year after what’s gone on this season with little sign of change.

Wests have done a bit of creative accounting with a few things - like the Knights used to outsource the catering to Wests in the old days, for which Wests made a handy profit. Now that profit goes on the Knights books, before they hand it to Wests, who own the Knights.

Apart from that, Wests held off taking over the Knights till the new TV deal and the new grandstand made them profitable, and then swooped in like Sir Galahad to save the day. Hooray.

Funny how we are talking about Wests in business and this article pops up on the Herald site.

Basically says Wests bought the old Workers club in the city 7 years ago when it was going bad for 19 million, completely renovated it and made it profitable, got approval to build 2 highrise apartment buildings where there carpark is now, and now they are selling just the carpark for 30 million to a company wanting to build the apartments.
