Mitch Barnett discussion

Some here are going a bit overboard.

He did a stupid act and will be suspended for a long stretch for it. Will have to live with that on his record for the rest of his playing days now.

If you saw the footage of him sitting in the sheds he was already crying about what he had done. They would have got rid of him from the sheds before half time so he wasn't a distraction, not to protect him from his team mates. I am sure they will rally around him and support him through this.

He will get a long stint on the sidelines and rightly so. But afterwards he will come back and hopefully through reserve grade. That will depend on what other injuries we pick up in the mean time.

I'll admit that I probably lashed out in emotional outburst during the game. But the elbow was deliberate, stupid and indefensible, I'm sure Mitch knows that, and it's just lucky that the brain fade was in a round 3 game.

One we probably won't remember in 20 weeks time, especially if Barnett returns from a suspension out to prove he is not a thug.

Today was disgraceful but have his brain snaps ever cost us previously? He’s done a few grubby things here and there but nothing on this level.

I wanted him gone earlier but I’ve calmed down since. He’s still a good player and he will rightfully get a long holiday but we’ll need him later in the year.

I reckon the thing he allegedly* called Peachey and the resulting scandal ****ed with our preparation for the 2020 finals.

We haven’t been good enough for the brain snaps to cost us previously to that. He copped a long one for another brain snap/cheap shot in 2018 I think but they were all games we were gonna lose anyway.

The thing about him for me is I just don’t think he’s that good a player the rest of the time. Of all our really established, popular, “key” first graders, he is the most common culprit for making really poor concentration/effort errors leading to soft line breaks IMO. He stands out as an effort player but that’s because he pours effort into eye catching things; I think his attention to detail is pretty poor, especially when things have gone against us a bit, he gets so sloppy.

His best role is likely bench middle, and that’s the only capacity I can cop him in moving forward. Don’t wanna have to rely on him under fatigue anymore. He can’t wait to let you down.

Mitch did a dumb thing and he knows it. He’ll pay for it and move on. Putting an already emotional incident (where he cried in the sheds) and putting him over the coals isn’t going to do anything. We all love his grub in other ways, similar to Radley and to aggressively hate on him on his socials to the point of death threats is appalling (not saying people are doing that here but there is some awful people out there)

HIS dumb thing moment happened in the 1st half.....Not the last 10 mins

but ha the boys have got plenty of ticker in 22.....Mitchy clean the bus out .🚌

Personally I see a lot of line breaks through the middle with tired forwards not able to slide laterally and make the tackle. Klem and Dsaf are culprits of this.

As for what Mitch brings to the team that is more for the coach to say. He clearly sees something there whether it be behind the scenes, off the ball stuff, defensive stuff. Hell, it could be his aggression the coach actually likes in the squad. Just not that sort of aggression.

Coach probably likes him starting and not on the bench because of that aggression in the opening period of a game where we are trying to gain ascendency over their pack.

I don't see Mitch especially guilty of letting us down as you say. In fact I think he hates letting the team down. Those tears in the sheds I reckon are there because he has let himself and the team down and he knows it.

Latrell last season on Manu, you think he was crying about it afterwards? Hell no he was defiant. Even to this day is defiant about it.

Dunno the relevance of Latrell here, weird non-sequitir to bring up. What Trell did was also bad, but you could at least call it a tackle which went wrong - Manu was a ball carrier in a try scoring situation. Barnett’s thing was a king hit. Hardly the same thing is it?

I could go through highlights of a bunch of games and point out a lot of memorable instances of Barnett’s bad 1-on-1 misses, but I’m just not that motivated. I do know though that I’m not the only one on here which has noticed this, and plenty will agree with me. Klem/Safs are at least getting bamboozled and wrong-footed, with Barnett I’m talking about blokes literally bursting through soft arms tackles.

Bet you anything that if Fitz or Brodie are fit when Barnett’s suspension ends, Mitch will be coming back into the team as a bench prop, and that will be his role going forward.

Latrell relevant due to his brain snaps. Which he has more regularly than Mitch. Lashing out with the boot well after a tackle is completed was another example. And yes, his tackle on Manu was on a ball carrier but it's a stretch to call it a tackle gone wrong, he was going in there to stop him no matter what the consequence. Mitch's shot was well out of order and a dog shot, I've already said that.

As I said, the coach sees all that you see I am sure, yet keeps starting him. I guess time will tell on his role going forward. Most people here that I've seen have a problem with mitch coming out of the line to put a shot on and missing. I can't say I have seen any complaining about his defence in the line with players busting through soft arm tackles.

Was going to reply with something very similar to this. Bench middle all day. This now gives a chance to a guy like Brodie to kill it and hopefully for Mitch to realize the games about the team performance not stupid dog shots.

Did smith get injured? I haven’t really watched the footage closely. It looked fairly soft contact from the replay?

Mitch had a brain snap and he will pay dearly for it as he should , i'm not really sure how it works but 6 weeks seems about right to me.
That's if he has no carry over points and then work his way back through reserve's for letting the team down .
I won't roast him too much because i like the aggression he plays with and i think he is a better player than some people are saying.
I also think people calling for his sacking are coming on a bit too strong , he will be dealt with and that should be the end of it and you can bet your bottom dollar he won't do it again.
Its a full on body contact aggressive sport imo the best in the world and aggression is a great thing but you CANT TRY to take someone's head off ..
I think something like that goes from aggression to violence aggression in our game i love violence not so much ( although i do miss the punch ups lol).

I read somewhere that AOB said Jones would have started ahead of Barnett yesterday if he hadn't come down with covid (may have been in the press conference?).

I think he's bench for sure, only position he suits starting in is lock, and we won't be playing his type of player there these days. He's not a second rower.

It's not the 1980s.
In the 1980s there were a lot of players who would do things like that deliberately, but anyone who would do that deliberately today would be insane - if only because it's going to cost him a lot of money.
It looked bad, but last guy who did stuff like that deliberately was Les Boyd and he got suspended for years.
Danny Williams?

That cheap shot was a horrific crusher tackle a few seasons back , that started the crack down

Failed HIA so I guess so
He may of been ruled out by the independent bunker regardless as he went down like he was concussed . Not going to defend Mitch here but watching the replay without the emotion . It doesn’t look as bad as It did first viewing . He doesn’t change direction toward him . He lifts his elbow sure but doesn’t strike with it
